Hi All,
Quite like this name, but DH and I are not agreeing on the pronunciation and/or the spelling. Can you give me any thoughts/opinions please? We like Scottish and/or Gaelic names, so any other suggestions (boy and girl) would be appreciated, as we cannot agree on the same combination :)

I know a Mirren, really like it.

I know of another but they have spelt it like the girl in Bfaveheart which has escaped me now

I know a Mirren. Always thought it's pretty and unusual.

What about Eilidh ?

1nsertnamehere · 27/12/2013 10:16

I'm not crazy about it with spelt with the U (it sounds a bit miserable if that makes sense?), but like it with the I (which gives it a lighter sound).

I think I have posted this before - there are some lovely Manx (from the Isle of Man) names here:

I love Eilidh, my DH isn't convince though! My choices were Eilidh and Roisin. DH likes Mirren (I prefer Murron) and Orlaith. We both like Saoirse too, but we live in Scotland so I am not too sure if its too much?

Aha - just hit on why I don't like it with the U. There used to be a very odd, miserable cartoon character by that name:

I really like Mirren and Muireann, but a murrain is an infectious cattle disease (like Anthrax) and Murron just feels a bit too much like that to me... Don't think this is a dealbreaker, though!

PointyDogs · 27/12/2013 16:05

Merryn? Its Cornish.

1nsertnamehere · 27/12/2013 16:22

Ooooh yes I like Merryn a lot.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 27/12/2013 23:42

I'm afraid it made me think of murrain immediately Sad

trixymalixy · 27/12/2013 23:46

Love Mirren, I wanted to use this name for DD. don't like Muireann, I just hear it spoken with a really nasal whine for some reason.

tipp2chicago · 27/12/2013 23:46

Muireann is the Irish spelling so I'm in favour of that. Smile

ilovesmurfs · 27/12/2013 23:50

My dd is Merryn, I also know a boy called meren.

We always get lots of lovely complimwnts on dds name.

mathanxiety · 28/12/2013 08:30

Muireann, pronounced Mwir-enn. (Mwir sounds like whir in whirl).

Second choice would be Merryn, and third would be Mirren.

If you use Orla, I would spell it Orla and not Orlaith. It's far easier to pronounce. Orla is the Modern Irish spelling and it is perfectly acceptable. One aim of spelling reform in the last century was to remove extraneous and unpronounced consonants.

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 28/12/2013 11:42

Mirrin or Mirren for a girl, Ruaraidh or Donald for a boy.

Clunch · 28/12/2013 14:13

Muireann is lovely. Pronounced as in Helen Mirren but with a 'w' sound after the first 'M'. 'Mwirren'.

bumblebeebzz · 28/12/2013 15:50

I know a Mirren, a Merran and a Murron. lovely names. Murron is my favourite out of them.
am in Scotland btw.
