Brynja?

I love this name. Pron. Brin-yah. It's Icelandic, we're not Icelandic in any way, in fact we are Jewish and DSs name reflects this. Ideally I would like a Hebrew name for new baby but I just keep thinking about Brynja!

The problem I foresee is that your child will forever be correcting people that pronounce their name Brin-jar.

Pronounced correctly it rhymes with ninja, so your child might be called at school, Brynja the Ninja, which may be cool. Or not.

Have you overindulged on christmas port? Horrid

BrianTheMole · 27/12/2013 01:36

Its a pretty name. But there might be issues over pronunciation.

NigellasDealer · 27/12/2013 01:40

it is not good.
some fine Old Testament name would surely be better?
what else is on your short list?

Sorry it's not good.

Just tell yourself it's your hormones. We all get weird ideas when we are pg.

Start another thread asking for Jewish names and you will get loads of great ideas I promise

InTheFace · 27/12/2013 02:02

I think Icelandic names might sounds best in...Iceland.

Here I think the name looks a little like a STI. Sounds nice though.

Sorry!

sleepingbeautiful · 27/12/2013 03:26

I would guess pronunciation as you intend. I also think it's an ok name. I'm a bit iffy about using obviously different (esp. Slightly obscure) cultural names with zero connection to your family though. Wouldn't everyone ask the child during their life, and they have no answer to give - conversation killer?

EirikurNoromaour · 27/12/2013 07:59

Don't be silly.

msmiggins · 27/12/2013 08:02

No sorry- sounds too much like brinjal whch is the Indian word for an aubergine.

ThistletoeAndWine · 27/12/2013 08:07

Sounds like a new curry

SundaySimmons · 27/12/2013 08:28

Brinsley?

When I was a little girl, I knew an older boy called Brinsley. He was lovely.

HarderToKidnap · 27/12/2013 08:59

Smile unanimous then! I think it's gorgeous but you are all right, too obscure and too many pron. problems. I did know a lovely girl called Brynja but her mum was Icelandic!

What about Bronja? It is Polish and I think rather lovely?

BlackholesAndRevelations · 27/12/2013 09:39

I knew a bronya at school. Sounds similar?

DorothyBastard · 27/12/2013 09:43

Imagine the teasing if she was ginger?

I thought it was rather nice Blush

Frontdoorstep · 28/12/2013 16:17

When I read the title of your post, I read the name as Brin-jah before I read your post telling people how to pronounce it. So I don't know if pronunciation would be a problem. I wouldn't choose it but it's pretty, yes it's ok.

Frikadellen · 28/12/2013 17:04

Growing up in Denmark I have known a couple all lovely girls so no bad associations for me pretty name

HyvaPaiva · 28/12/2013 17:09

I have a cousin called this and I don't much like the name. People most often mispronounce it Brine-Jah.
