Matilda or Tilly ?

So I love the name Matilda and like the nn Tilly , dh doesn't like Matilda but loves Tilly .... I don't want to call her Tilly as I can't imagine her older with that name, my thoughts are we called her Matilda but we and others use the nn Tilly- then when she's older she can sort of decide what she wants to be known as ie Matilda, Tilly , matty.

Dh isn't really considering any other name, I'm finding he just dismisses everything else I suggest and when I ask him for suggestions he always cones back to Tilly!

Can anyone recommend any other names ... We have a rubbish and long surname ! So need something quite short (ish) middle name is going to be Alivia- mix of Alice and Sylvia our grandparents names Tia Grin xxx

God there are a million names in my Ds2 nursery class I'd never pick (btw, we have a 'Princess' and a 'Junior' , Katie price/ Andre fans anyone!! eek!!)

Matilda is lovely!

And what about the royal Matilda, who fought Stephen for the crown. She was a pretty strong woman! I think it's a great name, and it would be a shame if you just named her Tilly (a good nn, but nowhere near as strong as Matilda.) But, if your DH really doesn't like it I'm not sure you'll be able to persuade him! What about Miranda or Natalia?

Giddyupgumdrop · 24/12/2013 18:30

I have a Matilda and we called her Tilly from the minute she was born but there are LOADS of them about unfortunately. At least 3 others in her school alone. Worth bearing in mind - though it shouldn't stop you naming your child whatever you like.

Not sure what she will call herself when she grows up. We named her after Tilda Swinton after watching Keanu in Constantine.

schmee · 24/12/2013 18:37

I think Tilda Swinton's name is just that, rather than Matilda so you could go with just that. To me Tilda is a great strong, grown up name. Ottilie is also great and could have Tilly as a nn.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 24/12/2013 18:43

I'd go with Matilda, I think it's a lovely name and I definitely prefer to give the long name and the choice later on rather than give a short version from birth. One of our cats is called Tilly Smile.

busylizzie76 · 24/12/2013 18:47

What about tabitha nn tabby

oopsadaisyme · 24/12/2013 18:58

No! Matilda all the way, beautiful name x

Crap,

thehouseoflego · 24/12/2013 20:13

I like it...

Tilda Swinton's real name is Katherine..Katherine Mathilda "Tilda" Swinton.

trinitybleu · 24/12/2013 20:24

Lovely names Trinitybleu! I really wanted to call my DD Tabitha but my DH vetoed it and so she is Alice instead, which does really suit her.

charliedrinks26 · 24/12/2013 20:41

Wow thankyou everyone :) really pleased others like the name too! Just a matter of persuading dh that Matilda is a better actual name than Tilly :) he's read this thread and think he might be changing his mind so thankyou all :)

I don't know any Matilda's and I'm not sure where the love of the name came from but I just love it and the nn it can have too :) pleased some of you have found the thread helpful aswell :) Grin xxx

schmee Tilda Swinton's name is Katherine.

She uses Tilda as short for Mathilda, which is her middle name.

MrsCosmopilite · 24/12/2013 20:59

I'd say go with a given name of Matilda, and then use 'Tilly' or 'Tilda' or whatever is preferred.

I know a plethora of Billies, Alfies and Millies - all of whom have no option to use William, Alfred or Millicent/Amelia as the nn is their given name.

looki · 25/12/2013 05:59

In reply to your question regarding persuading your husband how to go with a name he dislikes, I was a little the same with the name Philippa. I love the name Pippa and DH actively dislikes it. I knew I could 'wear him down' if I absolutely wanted to but do you really want to name your baby something her father doesn't like. There are thousands and thousands of other names. You will find one you both like!

We ended up going with something completely different (a name I chanced upon towards the end of my pregnancy) and we are both happy with her name (although I still like the name Philippa!).

amandine07 · 26/12/2013 07:55

I really like the name Matilda- thst should go on her birth certificate and then call her Tilly.

What's the problem with your OH not liking Matilda?! Tilly is the common accepted shortened version, I don't see the problem.
I don't think Tilly would be strong enough as the official first name...keep working on your husband!

amandine07 · 26/12/2013 07:57

PS I don't personally know any Matildas, young or old.
I really liked it after reading the Roald Dahl book with that title & she was a genius Grin

msmiggins · 26/12/2013 09:42

I have a great neice called Matilda- she gets called Tills.

BerniceBroadside · 28/12/2013 22:14

I know of an Otilya, nn Tillie. Think it's Polish.

I do like Matilda better.

fruitpastille · 28/12/2013 22:26

We have Matilda, nn Tilly or variants of that. She has Matilda on school books, name labels etc but if asked would give her name as Tilly.

what about Madeleine, nn Maddie? Or Alexandra, Lexie?

Kaekae · 28/12/2013 22:34

I love the name Matilda, so pretty. I would go for Matilda and Tilly or Tilda as a NN.

Puddles1234 · 28/12/2013 22:36

We have Ottilie on our list. You can use the NN Tilly / Tillie. I prefer Ottilie to Matilda.

TreaterAnita · 28/12/2013 23:29

I love Matlida too, and nn Tilly. Just convince your husband I'd say, he never has to call her by her full name unless she wants him to.

Of the alternatives suggested so far, I really like Penelope and Tabitha.
