Emilia nn Emmy

Just had my 20 week scan and found out we're having a girl (DC1), very exciting!

We really like Emmy, and I now that I know she's a girl I have just been thinking of her as Emmy. However my only reservation is that it could be a little bit "cutesy nicknamey" when she's an adult (maybe). We aren't as keen on Emma or Emily, or on Emmeline as a full name. Early on, we both liked Emilia but sort of discounted it as we worried people would get it mixed up with Amelia.

Now I am wondering if I should go for Emilia, which I do really like, on the birth certificate but call her Emmy. That way she has the more "proper" name, should she choose to use it as an adult.

Would appreciate any thoughts!!

A few other possible choices (though she just seems like an Emmy to me now!):

Erin (my favourite but DH not as keen)
Esme (DH's favourite but I find the Twilight connection too much!)
Ivy
Alice
Lucy
Rosa
Sophie
Eleanor

Hello and congratulations on having a girl.

My neice has a 14 month old girl called Emilia and she does get called Amelia a lot but if you are going to call her Emmy then people will soon realise how her name is spelled.

I have a friend has two daughters called Isabella and Cassandra as she wanted a full name on their birth certificates but they only ever get called Izzy and Cassy.

The other names you have are also pretty and I think Emilia Ivy sounds quite nice.

Thanks AugustRose, that's interesting about Isabella/Izzy and Cassandra/Cassy. I know people do it with boy's names too, like they might have Frederick on the birth certificate but always call him Freddie. I wonder if I would just introduce her as Emmy when she is first born and people ask what we have called her... or if I say Emilia... or if I kind of awkwardly say "Emilia but we're calling her Emmy"!

Thanks everlong, I do know what you mean about Emmy and to be honest it isn't to my usual taste! Hence my concern about needing a "proper" name that it can be short for. But there's just something about it...!

Alice is moving higher up the list... Grin

Emilia is a lovely name :)

I have a 6 month Erin and we tried out Emilia for a day before we officially named her! I also like Alice from your list.

I like Emmy, I know a lovely one.

I know an Emmy who is Emelia
To be honest, not my cup of tea and I always thought Emmy sounded a bit made up
I think they announced her as Emelia but known as Emmy

Mrsindecision · 22/12/2013 08:33

Emilia is a lovely name, yes it will get confused with Amelia for sure, but if you use Emmy as a nickname, that confusion should be considerably reduced. I also like most of your list, but not so keen on Ivy, Eleanor or Rosa.

I love Emilia and Emmy, go for it!

I'm less keen on the first three of your alternatives but love the rest of them.

I know a baby Emilia nn Emmy and she is v cute, I think it's lovely.

Plus there are other nns she could choose for herself when older if she grows out of Emmy, e.g. Millie, Lily, Leah...
