As I like cute names. But not sure about the name Matida/Mathilde.
Sibling for Poppy (& 2 boys!)

Otillie?

DevonFolk · 18/12/2013 08:27

I know a Tilly who is really Matilda but no one (not even parents and siblings) calls her Matilda. It's on her birth certificate and passport but other than that no one has any reason to think she's called anything other than Tilly.

chemenger · 18/12/2013 08:29

If you like Tilly, call her Tilly. If you call her Matilda what's to stop everyone calling her Matty or Tilda or Patsy or Cuddles? Nicknames happen, they are not made, I went through several years of life called Suzy, a name that does not even contain one letter of my actual name. Reason being that the song "Wake up Little Suzy" was current when I was a baby. I'm now called by my real name, unshortened, these things evolve.

MERLYPUSS · 18/12/2013 10:02

My mate Natalie is Tilly when she's being soppy.

AngryBeaver · 18/12/2013 19:06

How strange! The boys names are Finley and Rhoan (totally out myself to anyone that knows us )
I quite like ottilie ....
I don't think I could go for Tilly as a full name though.
And Tilda seems a bit harsh.

I have to warn you as I have an Ottilie and I absolutely loved her name.... until she got to nursery in September. Reality hit us right in the face when she came home carrying her very precious first artwork with the name 'Otterly' written on the back by one of her teachers. Needless to say I was fuming at first, now I'm just thinking whether we've made a mistake...

AngryBeaver · 18/12/2013 20:20

Hmm, well I think it's pretty usual for nursery staff to be quite young? It was the case when I lived in the UK.
So they have probably never heard of the name. But should have checked :(
Our surname was constantly misspelled and it's not that unusual!

But you do have a point.
Where we live now I think it would be pronounced, Odderly!
:-/

AngryBeaver - you must be the other side of the Atlantic!

I think Ottilie is a really lovely....

Natalie?

winkygirl · 18/12/2013 20:42

How about Ottoline?

TwllBach · 18/12/2013 20:43

I knew a Tilly, birth name Natalie.

AngryBeaver · 18/12/2013 20:56

Lynettescavo, I'm on a wee island in the Hauraki Gulf!
And I think the pronunciation of Ottoline would be even worse!! Odderloine?! Mmm, lovely! Wink

Not so keen on Natalie. Well, I like it, but wouldn't use it myself.

I know a Tylsley (pronounced Tills lee) known as Tilly & has been forever. I've never known her to be called Tylsley.

barbalala · 18/12/2013 21:40

AB - what a fab place to be, you lucky lucky thing!!

Not sure about accepting age as an excuse, I think it's more about ignorance and/or total lack of common sense.

If you move around a fair bit, I'd probably stick with a more internationally recognised name (sorry, not trying to be a smart aleck). What about Natalia as a variation of Natalie?

Leeds2 · 18/12/2013 21:42

Natalia?

InTheFace · 18/12/2013 21:46

Tilly short for Talitha (Tal-eeth-a, not rhyming with Tabitha)?

barbalala · 18/12/2013 21:47

Forgot to add I've also heard Tilly suggested as a nn for Tallulah.

SpicedTeaAndXmasCakeOrDeath · 18/12/2013 22:03

Most have already been suggested that I could think of, at a push maybe Myrtle?
Tilena?
Tila (means mighty in battle)?
Batilde/Batilda (means bright battle)?
Bertila (means she who fights)?
Chantile (means stone/boulder)?

AngryBeaver · 19/12/2013 02:42

It's not too shabby, let me tell ya! Grin
And nope, we're not moving around anymore, were staying put.
So no need for international name Smile
Spice, tans very much for those suggestions.
If I were a bit braver, I may go for 1 of them!

I'm thinking it will have to be a Mathilde :-/

minipie · 19/12/2013 10:03

What about just Tilda, nn Tilly?

Arf at Otterly (sorry barbalala! I think mistakes will become less common as the name gets more well known. And some teachers would misspell any name.)

AngryBeaver · 19/12/2013 21:29

I kind of like Tilda, but feel its a bit harsh?
Dh doesn't like it anyway.

bountyicecream · 19/12/2013 21:33

I know a Talitha (tal-eeth-a) who is known as Tilly.

AngryBeaver · 20/12/2013 01:06

Hmm, it's a bit Tulisa for me!

ImpOfDarkness · 21/12/2013 18:48

I know a Laetitia known as Tilly.

bronya · 21/12/2013 18:51

Talia?
