Albert/Albie

Any thoughts on Albert (nn Albie)? Albie is currently my affectionate name for the baby (8 weeks pregnant) but if it turns out to be a boy (we'll find out via blood test in a few weeks) it might stick. It's also a family name on my DH's side.

I can't decide if it's too old-fashioned. Just a cute name for a tiny wriggling bean or suitable for a fully fledged child?

I think you can totally get away with it. My BIL and SIL considered Albert, as it's a family name for us too, but made it Burton to give it a more modern twist.

Which was worth it just for the look on MIL's face Grin

(they had a girl in the end anyway though)

I know an Albie. Just Albie.

It's not a name I would use, but it's cute and it suits him.

ginzillas · 19/12/2013 11:23

I think it works now with all the old fashioned names coming back. Sits well alongside all the Alfies, Wilfs, Arthurs etc. You could also use the nickname Bertie when he's older.

Albert/Albie was on our list as it was the name of DH's late dad. I wasn't overly keen at the start but it grew on me. However, we had a girl!

I have an Albert, different nickname though as I'm not into the whole "Albie-Alfie-Archie-Charlie-Jamie-Eddie-Harry" thing.

I think it's a beautiful name and suitable from birth to old age! It has risen quite a bit in popularity in the recent years (though still outside the top 100).

Felix90 · 19/12/2013 16:58

It's definitely becoming more popular I've noticed. My brother is expecting DS2 in February and is calling him Albie (and it's annoying me that he's not calling him Albert and Albie for short!)

I like Wilf and I like Arthur but Albert/Albie just seems a bit too comical.
Cute for a baby but on a 14 year old?

HoneyandRum · 19/12/2013 19:32

My 7 yr old son's best friend is Albert, but we are in Germany so it's pronounced Al-bear-t. It's also considered an old fashioned name here but again older names are coming back. His name is never shortened and he is a very masculine and easy-going boy so carries his name well.

Albie the racist dragon.

I would giggle every time I heard it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

bunny never heard of that! Off to google...

I know a 14 yo Albie and he does suit it. I never considered it for my baby (who was a girl in the end) but might in future. My problem is that I love Albie but don't love Albert and wouldn't use the nn without full first name on birth certificate.

WeeTeaJenny · 20/12/2013 15:37

I love Albie it was on my last 3 names on my shortlist xx I think its fine on its own
