I love it - reminds me of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Grin

My great aunt was a Nancy and it was lovely as an adult name as well.

squoosh · 17/12/2013 22:22

Good for Nancy in Oliver Twist, she was a great character, her being a prostitute certainly wouldn't put me off.

David Cameron having named his daughter Nancy however would.

I wouldn't be bothered by anyone else having a child with the same name as mine. So the David Cameron connection wouldn't bother me much

I know 2 Nancys - an 80yo and a 40 yo. So maybe it's time for it to come round again?

squoosh · 17/12/2013 22:32

I picture Nancys as being ruddy faces games mistresses at a 1930's boarding school. Tweed skirt, stout brogues, mammoth hips, and a huge pash on Miss Twiddles who teaches Domestic Science.

DramaAlpaca · 17/12/2013 22:33

Not keen, sorry.

NancyOsbourne · 17/12/2013 22:34

Great name Wink

Love it! Reminds me of Oliver but that's not a bad thing!

ZombieSquirrel · 18/12/2013 00:18

Love Nancy! Very sweet but can also be strong iyswim.

With a -cy surname, I don't think so. It would sound quite childish, and I think with a -y name (like DD's name, so nothing against -y names) you have to be careful with that.

LittleBearPad · 18/12/2013 00:27

Well I love it. But I have a small Nancy asleep next door.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 18/12/2013 08:56

Zombie we have an -ey surname rather than a -cy surname.

Like Nancy Telbey

Does that sound childish?

I wouldn't worry to much about 'nancy boy' as a phrase it is even dated to my ears and i am pushing 50, I doubt any of your daughter's contemporaries will have even heard it.
It's a great name, makes me think of Nancy Blackett in Swallows and Amazons.

omuwalamulungi · 18/12/2013 09:19

If you name her Nancy, whatever surname you have it will just be her name and hardly anyone will probably even notice the -y -y endings. My sons surname is very unusual and still nobody really comments except about spelling, don't worry too much about that!

BuntyPenfold · 18/12/2013 12:41

JKRowling used the phrase nancy-boy in one of the HP books, I cant think which one just now.

I really like Nancy, its a name with sparkle.

sydenhamhiller · 18/12/2013 12:44

Don't like it. .dc3 is nancy. Don't know any others (after 3 children and childminding.) am trying to stave off unpopularity after calling another child a relatively unusual name, not even top 100. Now it's in the top 10 and everywhere!

Seriously, I like it. It has had mixed responses, but I don't mind, I like it!

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 18/12/2013 20:24

Love, love, love it!

I haven't heard the phrase Nancy Boy for about a decade and despite her occupation Dickens' Nancy was loyal, strong and spirited IIRC (been a while since I read it).

girliefriend · 18/12/2013 20:27

I like it, i have a friend who is in her early 30s with it and have always thought her name was very cool Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 18/12/2013 20:29

me too - she's probably my favourite character in children's fiction.

Leeds2 · 18/12/2013 21:45

I know two Nancys, one aged 15 and the other 13. I do always think "nancy boy." Would never use it myself.

LydiaLunches · 18/12/2013 21:51

I have one and have sort of gone off it a bit, just feel a bit prissy shouting it At the park but it does suit her. The surname combo you said is lovely though, nice rhythm to it. I wish I had gone for Agnes on her birth certificate ( can't do Anne with our surname). Another plus is there are lots of nancys in history who have done cool things, often for the first time.

barbalala · 18/12/2013 21:58

I always thought it sounded too American. Nancy is definitely catching on a bit round our way as I know three lil' ones with this name (none are American though).
