For years had a name for a girl, and oops! it's a boy. 36 weeks now and still don't have a name, will you help me choose one? Has to be a Hebrew name (hubby's demand) and pronounceable/nice-sounding for UK English speakers (as we're here to stay).
What do you think of these options I have so far?
Gili
Ziv (nickname Zivi)
Adi (nickname Didi)
Tal

How about Asa? Not sure if it's used in modern Israel but there are a few contemporary examples (eg Asa Butterfield, actor) I think it's lovely.

HoneywithLemon · 14/12/2013 09:36

Asa means Physician or cure btw

HoneywithLemon · 14/12/2013 09:38

I do like Ira (eg Ira Gershwin) as well, mentioned up thread

Boxofbugs · 14/12/2013 09:38

If you say something is "diddy" it means tiny.

I like Gil.

What about Itan (or is it spelt Etan)?

OKmum · 14/12/2013 09:42

Ha ha! good one! (diddy)

How's Ira pronounced? Is it Ee-ra or Ay-ra?

OP posts:
BoundandRebound · 14/12/2013 09:43

Asa
Elias
Saul
Gideon
Benjamin
Reuben
Levi

Boxofbugs · 14/12/2013 09:47

I meant Eitan not Etan. It means strong and I think it's a lovely name and easy to pronounce.

IslaValargeone · 14/12/2013 09:50

I'm no help at all, I love them all.
Like Elias especially, even though that wasn't on your list.

HoneywithLemon · 14/12/2013 09:56

You can pronounce Ira both ways. I prefer eye-ra

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 14/12/2013 12:03

I think Etan or is it aytan? Is cool.

I'm still campaigning for dovid/David though.

What about Moshe? Or moss?

Hebrew names I like

Ira (eye-ra and a close friend)
Elijah
Saul
Matthew
Peter

OpalTourmaline · 14/12/2013 22:40

Adi but I would have it short for Adam

thenightsky · 14/12/2013 22:43

Reuben is a fab name.

ZenNudist · 14/12/2013 22:50

I really liked elias but worry that the 'lie' part would get him teased at school.

Love Ezra.

Totallyunited · 14/12/2013 23:02

I also like Matan, Amir, Nadav, Shai and Noam.

mrsgumpy · 17/12/2013 12:48

I love all of them.

I also love:

  • Omri
  • Eitan/Eytan
  • Ariel (although not so great in UK because of washing powder)
  • Eli
  • Gidon
RalphRecklessCardew · 17/12/2013 18:24

Like all of them. Out of curiosity, how do what are seen here as traditionally 'Jewish' names (eg Malachi, Isaac, Joshua) read in Israel?

OKmum · 18/12/2013 16:36

RalphRecklessCardew - traditionally Jewish names are more common I think within traditional or orthodox families. Also they are pronounced different, so for instance 'Joshua' would be 'yehoshua', 'Isaac' would be 'Yitzchak'.

In our 'milieu' of - how shall I describe it? secular/liberal middle class families? the preference is usually for a more 'modern' Hebrew sounding name.
