Non biblical girls names

Britishseamonkey · 11/12/2013 23:13

I'm looking for a non biblical girl's name. Still want something quite classic, no flower names.
And when I say non biblical we also don't want names that are thought of as being part the 'Christian community' - so most Irish names , though I love them , and european names are out - nothing associated even vaguely as 'catholic'.
Any ideas?

Amy - French word for 'beloved' (Aimee)

Pretty sure there is no St Amy.

caramelwaffle · 12/12/2013 20:02

If you want non European names you would need to be looking at more traditional African/Asian/American/Australasian names.

Keiko
Effie
Suraya
Maya

There s a St Amy of Assisi (feast day 20 Feb).

SantanaLopez · 12/12/2013 20:15

nothing associated even vaguely as 'catholic'.

Bloody hell. Shame on you.

Jane - lovely and underused name.

Britishseamonkey · 12/12/2013 20:21

Yes I like a lot of the Greek names, and my son's name is roman. We ( especially my oh) don't want a name affiliated with a modern religion because his past involves - without going into detail- some quite extreme situations as a result of having grown up in an evangelical baptist environment which in his case was not healthy- and in fact one of the most bigoted environments I personally have ever come into direct contact with ( and I work for a human rights educational charity... so thats saying something) It isn't meant to be bigoted, but there are very definite personal reasons why for him it's important. It is not meant as an 'anti- religious'statement as such and in no way reflects our opinion of most religious people. There are LOADS of names I love that could be seen as 'biblical' - but I respect my oh's position on this one because I know the details of his reasons.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, some good one's there. I like Aimee - spelt the French way - which just means loved rather than a saint's name I think. ( just realised would have been clearer if I'd explained I wanted non saints names really when I was saying 'non catholic' sorry if I confused people! ) and I love Bethan

Beast of burden I think you are right, - that approach makes more sense then just trawling through names. Thank you

Isla

AuntieStella · 12/12/2013 20:25

Ste Aimee - better cross that one off.

AuntieStella · 12/12/2013 20:27

Bethan is a cognate of either Elizabeth or Bethany - both Biblical, so that one needs crossing off too.

SantanaLopez · 12/12/2013 20:28

nothing associated even vaguely as 'catholic'.

nothing associated even vaguely as 'muslim'.

nothing associated even vaguely as 'chavs'.

nothing associated even vaguely as 'blacks'.

I'm personally worried you work for a human rights charity.

Britishseamonkey · 12/12/2013 20:30

Yes I knew Bethan was biblical.... Sigh..... Still love it though x

There are a great many beautiful and classic Welsh names that don't have any religious overtones - Rhiannon, Carys, Nia, Angharad loads more even sticking to those with no pronunciation issues in English.

BikeRunSki · 12/12/2013 20:37

Yey for St Aimee. Dd will be well chuffed.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 12/12/2013 20:37

Santana: the OP hasn't said any of that, you have. She's given her reasons for her partner's view (not that they should have to justify themselves to anyone else)

Britishseamonkey · 12/12/2013 20:39

Santana Lopez - it's my baby- how does what I name her hurt anyone? And as I clarified - what I meant was no saints names. Because traditionally catholic names are saints names,( and in ireland there are names that are associated very much thought as 'catholic' and protestant) ' - Calm down and give me the benefit of the doubt. I'm not suggesting anybody else should follow suit. Or even that there is anything wrong with a saints name. I'm not going to justify myself anymore, if all you can do is be insulting that says more about you than me. If I didn't want a name from nature would that offend you?
Freedom of religion includes the right to not follow one, my choice does nothing to infringe on anybody else, and if you must know i've met with nothing but support at work

SantanaLopez · 12/12/2013 20:43

Why didn't you just say 'no saints names' then? Surely you can see how offensive your initial post came across. It's attitudes like that that entrench the sectarian divide.

Beastofburden · 12/12/2013 20:57

Santana, I have to say that most people will not have seen the OP as being sectarian or anti-catholic. I understand that people who have lived through difficult times might do. But I doubt many other people will have seen this as contributing to the sectarian divide.

In many ways, that is also the OPs position- her DH has lived through very difficult times with his religious upbringing. I can quite understand why he doesn't want his child named in a way that appears to show loyalty to a system he has suffered under. I wouldn't do it either.

Britishseamonkey · 12/12/2013 21:14

I think I was overcompensating for the fact that there are so many Mediterranean names I love that we've had to discard. Antonella - st Antony - Marguerite is a saints name etc - and ironically I was tryin to say what I meant without giving specific names because I didn't want to be negative in my openong post about names that potentially others may like/ have chosen!

Jessica? It is Shakespearean!

Iwaswatchingthat · 12/12/2013 22:19

If you like Bethan you might like Betsy? I know it derives from Elizabeth but not used in that form in the bible.

Iwaswatchingthat · 12/12/2013 22:20

Also if you like Aimee you may like Abbie.

Or Charlotte nn Lottie?
