Is this usable in English, how would you pronounce it and which spelling do you prefer?

Thank you :)

Well my name was going to be Aurelie, my french mother loves it. But all English including my father pronounce it orally which doesn't quite have the same ring to it Grin . so it isn't my name.

I think tbh you will find most people struggle to pronounce it. depends how bothered you are about it.

Indith · 09/12/2013 21:21

Should have said, I prefer the first spelling and would pronounce eau (like French for water) re (French e with acute accent can't find it on phone) anne.

No disrespect OP, look at the thread where people are complaining about school spelling their dc names wrong.
It happens and follows them through life.
If it doesn't bother you that is fine, but some people get really worked up about it.

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2013 21:21

I'd pronounce both "orryANN".

I prefer the Oriane/Orianne spelling.

Indith · 09/12/2013 21:26

My attempts at describing how I'd pronounce it are shit. Can I just get away with saying I'd pronounce it French. Though that doesn't give a reflection of how an English person would.

My DC are condemned to spelling out their names in England for life already, I'm condemned to spelling mine out in France, doesn't bother me! What worries me is if people are completely unable to guess at how to say it. Besides by the time it's an issue in the UK hopefully she'll be able to spot any spelling mistakes in her name and stick up for herself :) What I'm more worried about is if we send out birth announcement cards with Aurianne people aren't going to have a clue what her name is.

Mild mispronunciations are probably going to be a fact of life but orryanne or or-ree-anne or or-ray-anne are close enough.

I love Aurelie but the Orally thing is very off-putting.

It is the whole Au sound isn't it, the poor brits just can't do it. dh struggles and he has a degree in French. At least Oryann as a pronunciation isn't as bad! I think that girl Colin Firth fell in love with in Love Actually had helped a bit. Aurelia want she?

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2013 22:17

Like most Brits I can't get the Au sound right, despite doing French to A level. I know how it should be pronounced, but it just doesn't come out right!

I like both Aurelia and Aurianne. Beautiful, feminine and not overused.
