Christmas and baby names

Hi all,
I am expecting a December baby (possibly arriving on Christmas day). For a boy, I always liked the name Nicholas, but given the season (St Nick, Santa Claus, etc), is Nicholas a bit lame? Will he be made fun of? Thanks for your honesty and any other name suggestions most welcome (boy or girl).

Basically, I am looking for a straight-forward Enlgish name that is suitable as a child, teenager, and adult.

THANKS!

My DS is a Christmas day baby. [Smile]

If you like Nicholas I think it is totally fine to call him that!! I don't think he will be made fun of, people don't normally associate birthdays until they are much older??? I like the name.

I also like these traditional names:
Thomas
Samuel
George
Harry
Henry
Christopher
Jack
William
Andrew (Scottish though but good solid name)

I wouldn't do it, personally... But then I'm faced with having the surname Christmas, so all those Christmassy names are a million times worse for us. Nicholas I could just about see being ok for a Christmas baby, as it might just be subtle enough, but names like Noel, Carol, Holly, Eve, etc would be a bit to much. But then it's your baby. I doubt children would peg Nicholas and make fun, but when he's an adult his friends might take the mick.

What about Bradley?

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 08/12/2013 22:41

I wouldnt make the St Nick connection. Nice name. Prefer Thomas and Daniel, if its traditional names you like.

Tikkamasala · 08/12/2013 23:12

I think Nicholas is a good all rounder, not just a purely Christmas name. Don't think it would raise any eyebrows on a Christmas baby and don't think Anyone would laugh at him.

amandine07 · 08/12/2013 23:19

I think Nicholas is a strong name that is classic & timeless.

Honestly wouldn't make any connection to Christmas Day- the St Nick doesn't feature on my radar really...maybe other mums would make a connection & comment & be interested for a few minutes.

Very much doubt school kids would make a connection, let alone bully him over it.

If you called him Noël now that would be blinkin obvious!

Thanks so much for the feedback and suggestions! And Wishing you all a Merry Christmas.

I went out with a Nicholas for 6 years, born on the 20-something of December and I've only realised the Xmas connection after reading this thread!

If you encounter people like me in your life, baby Nick will be absolutely fine!

ZingSweetPea · 09/12/2013 03:41

Nathan, Nathanie & Natalie are very suitable as are Noel/Noelle.

we have Name days in Hungary (and they are celebrated with much the same intensity as birthdays) - I only remember Adam & Eve is 24th December, but I can look up more if you are interested.

Christian, Christoph, Christina, Mary, Joseph, Gabriel and Joshua (another form of Jesus), Caspar/Jasper would all be very nice.

other ideas: Stephen, Holly, Ivy, Belle, Hope

Good luck with the imminent arrival, hope it all goes well!

DS was due on the 20th December, I went into labour on the 23rd and he was born on Christmas Day. It is a shame for him having to share his birthday but it was really quite special being in labour and having the salvation army carol singers outside the room. Makes me well up thinking about it!

ohtanmybum · 09/12/2013 21:20

Very best wishes on your Christmas babe - I hope you haven't discounted Melchior, Balthazar and Casper, that would be very unwise.

NomDeClavier · 10/12/2013 11:55

I'm due 24th and avoiding themed names like the Plague. I'd consider Nicholas though - St Nicholas is the beginning of December and the only day I'd actively avoid it is probably Sinterklaus itself.

Frontdoorstep · 12/12/2013 16:00

I think Nicholas is a nice name and fine for a Christmas baby, I actually think it makes it seem even more special since it has a Christmas connection. It is a subtle Christmas name so absolutely fine to use IMO.

I called my Christmas baby Natalie, again very subtle, hardly anyone comments on it, they probably don't make the connection. She may well have been Natalie anyway at any other time of the year but being Cnristmas that just totally swayed me.

BlackberryandNettle · 12/12/2013 19:35

I really like Nicholas, it's on our list too. The Christmas connection is nice but not overly obvious every time he introduces himself in the way that Holly or Noelle or Rudolf would be imo.

BikeRunSki · 12/12/2013 19:38

St Nicholas's day is 6 Dec and is mainly celebrated in The Netherlands. I don't think a baby Nicholas born later in December in the UK will raise many comments.

PipkinsPal · 12/12/2013 19:43

I was in school with a boy whose birthday is around the beginning of December and his name is spelt Niclas.

jaundicedoutlook · 12/12/2013 23:11

Noel, if you can get past the Edmonds connotations...!

ancientbuchanan · 12/12/2013 23:29

Natalie and Natasha for girls, or
Angela,
Angelique,
Gabrielle,
Raffaella,

Nueves meaning snow, or
Blanche, for while?

Beth? For Bethlehem?

Aurelia, golden, for the gold

. Aurelia Beth or Aurelia Blanche quite pretty, the latter a golden white child.

Or Mary Beth. Or one of the Mary variations.

Maria
Marie
Mariette
Miriam
/ Merran
Marianne
Marian
Marney

Boys, I love Nicholas and wanted to give it to Ds who was born in 6 Dec but he already had 3 names. But Gabriel,
Raphael/ Raffael
Michael,

all angels. Ok Gabriel really comes in march on 25 and Michael is Sept, but wtf.

Francis, reminding you of frankincense, or Frank,
Yes,
Caspar,
Melchior,
Balthazar, or
Luke, because he focused more on the nativity than the others.
Stephen if on st Stephen's day, or
john if born on 27th, the disciple Jesus loved.

Aurelius meaning golden.
