Thora?

Opinions?

I instantly think of Thora Hird but old lady names are all over the place at the mo so that shouldn't be a problem! And Thora Birch, what happened to her?

I likes names that end in A, I want one that's unusual but not to crazy or complicated.

I love the name Thora. I instantly think of Thora Birch too but I don't think that's a bad thing.

It's currently number 2969 in the rankings! What's wrong with it? Why didn't it get popular along with Freya? They are both Norse names, is it the Thora Hird/Stannah stair lift association?

The Nordic version of Thora is Tora, pronounced like Torah. This might be the reason it is not that popular outside of Scandinavia.

My husband was insistent on this name for our daughter, because of the Thor link. I actually know it would have suited her very well.

We didn't go for it because I am Christian and want her baptised. Didn't fancy that conversation with the priest.

It makes me think of the bit in Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love about Uncle Matthew's fondness for a song with a chorus that goes "Speak speak speak to me Thora!"
I like it - especially with the Norse connotations. It's actually much nicer than the ubiquitous Freya.

But I do have to work quite hard to banish the spectre of that Thora harumphing on Last of the Summer Wine.

I love Thora, beautiful and strong, we couldn't use it because half the population around here would pronounce it 'tora', if you live where people pronounce their th's, it's a great name.

Thora Bitch is a younger Thora too. It suits her.
