Thora?

Opinions?

I instantly think of Thora Hird but old lady names are all over the place at the mo so that shouldn't be a problem! And Thora Birch, what happened to her?

I likes names that end in A, I want one that's unusual but not to crazy or complicated.

I love the name Thora. I instantly think of Thora Birch too but I don't think that's a bad thing.

dyslexicdespot · 07/12/2013 14:04

I really like it!

tweetytwat · 07/12/2013 14:05

I think Hird. Sibilant mutters about stairlifts TBH.
Thea?

BananaHammocks · 07/12/2013 14:05

It's currently number 2969 in the rankings! What's wrong with it? Why didn't it get popular along with Freya? They are both Norse names, is it the Thora Hird/Stannah stair lift association?

I reckon people not much younger than me (and deffo people of my childrens generation will never have heard of her!

The Nordic version of Thora is Tora, pronounced like Torah. This might be the reason it is not that popular outside of Scandinavia.

Curioushorse · 07/12/2013 14:09

My husband was insistent on this name for our daughter, because of the Thor link. I actually know it would have suited her very well.

We didn't go for it because I am Christian and want her baptised. Didn't fancy that conversation with the priest.

BananaHammocks · 07/12/2013 14:12

We are complete heathens so no problems like that here!

Love Thora!

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 07/12/2013 21:02

Love Thora and as it goes well with my DDs name, I am putting it on the list for a future dd.

Bluestocking · 07/12/2013 21:09

It makes me think of the bit in Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love about Uncle Matthew's fondness for a song with a chorus that goes "Speak speak speak to me Thora!"
I like it - especially with the Norse connotations. It's actually much nicer than the ubiquitous Freya.

squoosh · 07/12/2013 23:04

I quite like Thora actually.

But I do have to work quite hard to banish the spectre of that Thora harumphing on Last of the Summer Wine.

perlona · 07/12/2013 23:17

I love Thora, beautiful and strong, we couldn't use it because half the population around here would pronounce it 'tora', if you live where people pronounce their th's, it's a great name.

FobblyWoof · 07/12/2013 23:17

I love it. My instant thought is Birch too.

womma · 08/12/2013 08:53

It's a great name

ThoraNomiki · 08/12/2013 09:44

Love it but do think of Hird, but I am rather elderly.

mirry2 · 09/12/2013 20:14

No no and thrice no!

IsleOfRight · 09/12/2013 20:16

Love it

Beamur · 09/12/2013 20:16

I reckon you could use it now without anyone batting an eyelid - I like it, it's an underused 'granny' name.

TeamJavert · 09/12/2013 20:19

Love it.it does make me think of Thora Hird, but that wouldn't prevent me from using it.

TeamJavert · 09/12/2013 20:21

Thora Bitch is a younger Thora too. It suits her.
