Anne with an Irish O surname

Anne is just about the only girls name we can agree on but I don't think it goes with a surname that starts with a vowel. What do you think? If not Anne, what other names might I like?

Annie O' sounds better. Otherwise it sounds like "A no ..."

bundaberg · 04/12/2013 19:40

i think it sounds fine

Galena · 04/12/2013 19:50

I went to school with an Ann o'Something and it was fine.

meditrina · 04/12/2013 19:53

Fine, unless it's O'Domini

YoniMitchel · 04/12/2013 20:03

I'm Irish and I know loads of Anne O's ....Grin

Rosencrantz · 04/12/2013 22:26

As long as it's not Anne O'Flan... Something!

Mrswellyboot · 04/12/2013 22:29

Nothing wrong with it at all. Lovely actually.

InTheFace · 04/12/2013 22:31

Anne O'Malley...?

InTheFace · 04/12/2013 22:32

Sorry, more helpfully, Anne with an e is lovely. I am of the Anne of Green Gables generation.

JuneauWhoIAm · 04/12/2013 22:35

I know lots of Ann O's and a few Anne O's and lots of Annie Mc's

For some reason, the Annie's are only ever with Mc's :)

Yes I'm Irish too!!

For what it's worth, Anna is a softer alternative IMO.

Idreamofgenewilder · 04/12/2013 22:49

I know lots of Anne O people and don't see any problem with the vowel issue. Other one-syllable O people I know are Ruth, Clare and Maeve, which I think are all lovely, simple, non-frilly names.

ClaraBarton · 05/12/2013 00:34

You hardly ever hear Anne anymore. It's very sweet, pure sort of name. I know one, she's about 2. I also know an Annie, which I love too. I think with an Irish surname, Annie would just be a bit much though.

squoosh · 05/12/2013 02:34

I know a fair few Anne O's, never thought anything of it before. It has a 50 something Irish woman's vibe about it.

fatfingers · 05/12/2013 19:36

Meditrina that made me laugh! Thanks everyone. Maybe it's not to be ruled out then. I do like Ruth and Maeve Idreamof, we are considering Ruth actually. Will they be called Roof at school though? DH says "of course they will". DH doesn't like Maeve so that's out.

Had considered Anna but older dds both have 2 syllable names that end in A so though it might sound better to have a 1 syllable name for the 3rd.

Annie sounds better that Anne imo. Just flows a little better.

Xavielli · 06/12/2013 10:19

I'm a Ruth - never found the 'Roof' thing all that bothersome. I probably had more cause to than most as I am Ruth the roofers daughter Grin
