Is it too over-used as a middle name?

Yes.

But rare as a First Name.

I love it as a FN but dont as a MN.

Wobblebeans · 03/12/2013 11:57

My dd2's middle name is rose, but then it's a name in the family, I like it.

Rosa · 03/12/2013 11:58

My dds middle name is Rose. I had never even consulted name books , looked at the amount it was being used. It was / is a family name for us and has significance .. If you like it and want to use it then do !

JemR234 · 03/12/2013 11:59

It's very pretty but yes, alongside May and Grace it's the modern equivalent of Jane and Louise as one of those 'standard' middle names. It does tend to flow well as a middle name which I guess is why it's so popular.

I think it's nice to use the middle name to honour a family member or go for something more unusual that you aren't quite brave enough to use for the first name.

Same here Wobble.

DD's middle name is Rose after my favourite auntie so I don't give a stuff that it's popular Grin .

I think if you have family reasons it supersedes all 'fashion' things.

cloggal · 04/12/2013 23:26

Hmmm. Not sure about mn, perhaps. I love Rosa, slightly different but haven't heard it as often...

looki · 05/12/2013 09:11

It probably is tbh but it's a middle name and how many people go around introducing themselves by their first and middle names? I know that only a handful of people know my middle name and they are all immediate family.

I have to say I don't really get the whole idea of whether middle names 'go' with first names for the above reason.

Similarly I really think that if somebody grows up detesting their given first name and decides to change it, its more likely they will choose a different name entirely or a variation/shortening of their first name rather than their middle name.

MrsT2007 · 05/12/2013 12:42

It's a lovely name; my daughter has it as a middle name after my lovely great aunt.

Son has great grandads name as his middle name.

It's classic, pretty, and doesn't age.

heidihole · 05/12/2013 12:44

Overused as a 'filler' middle name certainly. That doesn't apply to all who have it because of family/special meaning obviously.

Underused as a first name though so it depends where in the "order" you were planning to use it!

ladymia · 05/12/2013 12:47

Yes!

evelynj · 05/12/2013 12:54

Yes, please stop using it! Joke. It's one of my 4 month dd's middle names as it's a family name but would have used Maybe Primrose as first name or something else with rose in it.

MillyMollyMama · 05/12/2013 13:11

We have a family history with Rose names: Rasalie, Rosetta, Rose, Primrose, Rosanna etc. so we used Rose as third name for DD. Interestingly when Rose was used in the family, about 100 years ago, it was used as a second name, not the first. We went along with that as when DD was born her great aunt Rose was still alive. I would not have used it for a first name as a few years ago we knew loads of girls called Rose or Rosie.

Rosencrantz · 05/12/2013 13:27

I think it's done to death as a middle name.

Go ahead, use it if it has family significance though.

Rosemary, Rosaline/Rosalind etc are gorgeous first names.

MPB · 05/12/2013 13:28

Yes it is popular. I had Rose picked out as a first name if DS2 had been a girl.
