If you named your kid these, would you consider it a boy or a girl name?

Sidney/Sydney?
For me, Sidney for a boy obviously, and Sydney for a girl. If hearing them, without knowing spelling, I would assume girl.

Quinn?
I would always assume a boy. I have heard of a few girls called Quinn though, but I always thought it was masculine?

Parker?
For me, a boy name would be my preference, although obviously as unisex it can be both, but I know quite a few girls called Parker (nn Kerry).

Cameron (and Cameryn etc;)?
To me, Cameron is a boy name. I know a girl called Cameryn though.

Aubrey?
I didn't know it used to be a boy name!

Riley (Rylee, Rileigh etc;)?
I like it for a boy but know two girls called a variant of Riley. Smile

Kelly?
Dylan/Dillon?
Jordan (Jordyn)?
Taylor?
Cassidy?
Bailey?
Morgan?
Ashley?
Casey?
I know a girl called Casey and two boys, one called KC and one called Kasey.

Just wondering! Smile Any other unisex names which you naturally assume to be one gender?

Sidney - boy
Quinn - boy (short for Quentin)
Parker - boy
Rowan - boy

All very masculine. There are far prettier, more feminine girls names around imo.

Bailey - boy
Morgan - I know it's traditionally male, but my first association is girl
Ashley - boy

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/12/2013 11:48

I would think that most of them are surnames TBH.

AuntieStella · 02/12/2013 11:54

Sidney/Sydney? - unisex
Quinn? - boy
Parker? - boy (child of Thinderbirds fanatics)

Cameron? First encountered in Jilly Cooper, so see it as either, but would expect a boy in RL
Cameryn etc? - typically female suffix, but actually wouldn't want to guess

Aubrey? - boy, definitely (form of Oberon)

Riley? - prefer on a boy, but could be either

Kelly?- girl (in my generation)
Dylan/Dillon? - boy
Jordan (Jordyn)? - unisex
Taylor? - expect boy, but could be either
Cassidy? - boy
Bailey? - boy
Morgan? - unisex
Ashley? - unisex (tending towards boy)
Casey? - expect boy but could be either

HyvaPaiva · 02/12/2013 11:59

I would say the same as kreecher.

I'm in Canada, don't know if that changes things...
Sidney - boy Sydney - girl but if I just heard the name and didn't see it spelled out I'd assume girl
Quinn - girl
Parker - either
Cameron - boy
Aubrey - girl
Riley - either
Kelly - girl
Dylan/Dillon - boy
Jordan (Jordyn) - either
Taylor - either
Cassidy - girl
Bailey - either
Morgan - either (all I know personally are female)
Ashley - girl (never met a male Ashley)
Casey - boy

bonbonpixie · 02/12/2013 12:53

Sorry, but I have no idea where this god awful obsession with substituting letters for a 'Y' as a girly alternative came from. We have a DD who is Cameron. Not Cameryn or any other such nonsense. Why why why change a beautiful name and make it (in my opinion) somehow less. Sorry rant over. Smile

itsnothingoriginal · 02/12/2013 12:54

Apart from Kelly, I would assume the owners of all the names you listed were boys unless I was told otherwise (or it was obvious on meeting the child/person!).

I think if you asked the same question on a US website you'd get quite a different response - they seem to love unisex names and I do think it's filtering through to the UK!

ThurlHoHoHo · 02/12/2013 13:00

A mix on those. Boys to me would be Sidney, Quinn, Parker, Cameron, Riley, Dylan, Jordan, Bailey, Ashley and Casey. Girls would be Sydney, Aubrey, Kelly, Taylor, Cassidy and probably Morgan, though I have heard for that for a boy as well.

Interestingly, DD has a genuinely unisex name (the 'A' one that is a normal shortening for both a common boys and a common girls name, so with the same spelling for both sexes). Despite calling my own daughter that name, if I just read it written down i.e. Axxx Smith, I tend to think they will be a man Confused

ToffeeJungle · 02/12/2013 13:03

I would think all were boys apart from Kelly and Cassidy.

I do know a female Ashleigh though first thought would be boy (and spelt Ashley).

I know of a female Robyn, Drew, Glenn, Toni and Terri which all seem more like boys names to me (though spelt Robin, Drew, Glen, Tony and Terry).

I also know a male Lindsay though definitely see this as a girls name.

MarianneBrandon · 02/12/2013 13:03

Sidney - boy or girl (I know a girl called Sidney and there was Sidney Prescott in Scream)
Quinn - Girl
Parker - Boy
Cameron - Boy
Aubrey - Girl
Riley - Boy
Kelly - Girl
Dylan - Boy
Jordan - Boy
Taylor - Boy
Cassidy - Girl
Bailey - Boy or Girl
Morgan - Boy or Girl
Ashley - Girl
Casey - Boy

MarianneBrandon · 02/12/2013 13:10

I don't like Sydney, Cameryn, Rylee, Rileigh and Jordyn as attempts to make the names more feminine. They just look like cre8tive spellings. The traditional spellings are much better imo

shoobidoo · 02/12/2013 15:07

Sidney - Boy
Quinn - Boy
Parker - Boy
Cameron - Boy
Riley - Boy
Dylan - Boy
Jordan - Boy
Taylor - Boy
Morgan - Boy
Bailey - Boy or Dog

Aubrey/Audrey - Girl

Cassidy - Girl
Ashley - Girl
Casey/Cassie - Girl

MrsBungleScare · 02/12/2013 15:15

Exactly as boo above!

MrsBungleScare · 02/12/2013 15:15

Sorry! shoo

NomDeClavier · 02/12/2013 15:18

I would assume most were boys tbh, except Cassidy and Kelly, but I wouldn't necessarily be surprised to find I was wrong.

SpookedMackerel · 02/12/2013 16:12

I would assume Cassidy and Kelly to be girls, the rest boys. I would be surprised to meet a boy called Kelly or a girl called Parker or Dylan or Aubrey, but the others are more unisex IMO.

lljkk · 02/12/2013 17:48

Girls: Aubrey, Kelly, Cassidy, Ashley

Boys: Quinn, Parker, Cameron, Riley, Dillon, Bailey, Morgan, Casey (although I know a girl one)

Either: Sidney, Jordan, Taylor

lljkk · 02/12/2013 17:48

Thing is, you don't choose names like that if you care if the child's gender is mistaken, do you? It's part of the appeal of endogenous names, I thought.

NightCircus · 02/12/2013 17:52

Kelly girl.
Morgan, Ashley unisex.
Bailey - dog.

Aubrey - boy or daughter of a dyslexic parent who unfortunately mistook if for Audrey.

The rest boys.

Unless the parents are American in which case all bets are off.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 02/12/2013 17:59

All are either.
The rather masculine (lovely, muscly arms) lead singer of Stereophonics is called Kelly.
