Sullivan or Lachlan?

Found out last week that we're expecting baby boy #2 and just trying to whittle down the names.

Love both Sullivan and Lachlan, but erring towards Sullivan - general mumsnet poll on preference?

DS#1 is Carter and I think both go well.

I really love Sullivan but I think you will get mixed reviews here as it seems many don't like surnames as first names. As you already have Carter, you can probably dismiss that concern!

Leeds2 · 27/11/2013 17:09

Lachlan.

ToffeeJungle · 27/11/2013 17:19

Much prefer Lachlan though actually think Sullivan goes better with Carter.

oopsadaisyme · 27/11/2013 17:20

Really? Sullivan will be shortened to 'sully' (monsters inc?) and Lachlan, really?

I'm sorry, Carter is a lovely name, I really like that, but really can't get the two mentioned, unless there's some special reason behind both, in which case I apologise totally!!! xxxx

Naebother · 27/11/2013 17:22

Lachlan. Cool name

oopsadaisyme · 27/11/2013 17:27

Oh and please don't think I'm being offensive!! I'm really not!! xxx My niece was just christened 'Lowri' and I love her to bits, she's gorgeous, but 'matchstick men' was mentioned by me!!

Ignore me! (I've got a name which has totally mistaken me for a man my whole life, so who who am I to talk lol!) x

Theonlyoneiknow · 27/11/2013 17:39

Love Lachlan!

Strokethefurrywall · 27/11/2013 20:28

We're on a small island just south of the USA so the naming conventions for both UK and USA haven't really applied here (popular names wise) - I think there is such a mish mash of nationalities and cultures that everyone kind of rolls into one!

There are lots of kids with surnames for first names though and DH is Scottish and has a very Scottish surname as his first name so I guess it just runs in the blood.

I love both Sullivan and Lachlan (there are a few Lachlans here, very popular with the Aussies), not too fussed by the nickname worries really.

I think we just like names that aren't common but not unheard of either! I guess we'll just have to see what he looks like when he arrives!

PS. I think Lowri is a really lovely name but then I have no idea what matchstick men are!

If DS1 has his way, baby will be called George Dinosaur or Peppa Pig...

Strokethefurrywall · 27/11/2013 23:43

Ha scottishmummy the irony doesn't escape me that he has no trouble pronouncing Lachlan correctly but can't pronounce any of the other "normal" names I've suggested!

Thanks for the congratulations and all the feedback everyone.

Aye,but it's a great thing to bag a Scottish man.

CormoranStrike · 30/11/2013 18:30

Lachlan, NN Lachie.

scottishmummy · 30/11/2013 18:59

dont use nickname lachie sounds like Lackey servant, dogsbody .not nice

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 02/12/2013 07:52

I knew a Lachie, never for one instant did Lackey cross my mind.

BalloonSlayer · 02/12/2013 08:03

I wouldn't know how to say Lachlan.

The surname MacLachlan is usually pronounced McLocklin or McLoughlin or with the gh sounding like a soft throat-clearing sort of noise, isn't it?

So if I saw the name Lachlan I'd be thinking, is this boy (please God tell me it's a boy!) called:

Locklin
Lo(clearing throat noise)lin
Loughlin
La(clearing throat noise)lan
Latch-lan
Lack-lan

Confused
Idreamofsunshine · 03/12/2013 23:25

Lachlan is a million times nicer than Sullivan
