Pretty sure I had a thread on this when pg with DC1 (who turned out to be DD1)!

DH and I still love this name and it is on the short list for DS1. But I seem to remember a lukewarm reception last time due to a cartoon character which I hadn't heard of Hmm

Just thought I'd run it past you again!

Rudd

catinboots · 26/11/2013 09:38

Fudd I meant

NickNacks · 26/11/2013 09:39

Elephant

GeeinItLaldy · 26/11/2013 09:39

Yep, Fudd is the first thing that springs to mind for me too.

curlew · 26/11/2013 09:40

the Elephant.
Fudd.

Sorry :(

UriGeller · 26/11/2013 09:40

Yep. Elmer Fudd.

BaronessBomburst · 26/11/2013 09:41

Fudd.

And then I opened the thread to see how many other people had said it.

BaronessBomburst · 26/11/2013 09:44

He's the hunter after Bugs Bunny

Crumpledandcreased · 26/11/2013 09:44

I was at a kids event recently and came across two little girls (I assumed they were sisters) called Elmer and Dixie.

Wildwaterfalls · 26/11/2013 09:47

Ah yes that was it. Someone in Bugs Bunny. Is this still popular with children? Does it matter?

I don't mind quite like the elephant connection.

Elmer the elephant.

babyfedleaning · 26/11/2013 10:04

I know a 70 year old woman called Elmer

curlew · 26/11/2013 10:08

Do you know her well? If not, are you sure it's not Eimear she's called?

MerryMarigold · 26/11/2013 10:13

I like Elmer for a boy. I think it's really cute. I don't think many kids would know the Bugs connection, mine wouldn't. They would know the elephant though. And I would also think of elephant before the farmer.

I have some 2 boxes of Elmer room stickers going spare if you do decide to name him this Wink.

Bronteshoes · 26/11/2013 10:23

Yup, Elmer Fudd. Parents I'm sure would make the connection but I doubt kids would. I'm sure in the 80s/early 90s few people would have chosen Oscar due to the Sesame Street grouch character but it's not an issue now.

Wildwaterfalls · 26/11/2013 10:30

Thanks Merry Grin

We are very tempted. It's hard to find a name that works in all our languages and I've already bought an elephant.

Fine unless he ends up on the chunky side and then the elephant connection might be bully-bait.

Bakingtins · 26/11/2013 10:35

Elephant.

MerryMarigold · 26/11/2013 10:41

Nah. By the time Kids get to bullying age (even 5, which is on the young side), they have forgotten about Elmer.

trainersandcake · 26/11/2013 10:44

I think it's really cute!

Plus Elmer the Elephant is a lovely story about not judging people by their appearances, and it's a book for very young children so it's not as though your son would have a whole life of being compared to it.

poppydaisy · 26/11/2013 10:52

Elmer is a great name! Lots of names have are 'used' by cartoon characters -e.g. Horrid Henry, Rupert Bear, Thomas Tank Engine, Felix Cat, etc. An elephant is quite a cute association, no?

People quickly start to associate a name with a person and forget about previous associations, so people will think of your Elmer when they hear the name.

No idea who/what Fudd is... and very much doubt any kids would..?

FrumiousBandersnatch · 26/11/2013 10:55

I like it. I agree that most chn won't get the Fuddled connection, although their parents and teachers will.

They are more likely to mis-hear it as 'Elmo'...

squoosh · 26/11/2013 12:14

If he emerges from the womb with a rifle definitely go for Elmer.

TeamSouthfields · 26/11/2013 13:23

elmer the elephant

CarryOnDancing · 26/11/2013 13:52

I like it, it's cute but has a grown to feel too! Yes there are associations but I don't see that as a reason not to use a name (unless it's a negative one of course!). An elephant and cartoon character aren't negative and Elmer is and does sound like a name in it's own right.

Once they know your Elmer, that's the association they will make.
I'd be adding it to my list if it went with our surname!
