Norah

My DP and I love this name... but my family absolutely hate it. TTC atm but thought I'd post thread after conversation with my mother last night when she really turned her nose up at it - I'm name mad and we had possible future boy name sorted before even TTC (Theodore nn Teddy) so I get so fixated on girl names!

I also adore the name Kitty but DP hates it!!

Any suggestions of names similar to Norah/Kitty??... Last name is 2 syllables beginning with Green...

I like the idea of a long pretty name but have never been able to settle on one, also like more old fashioned not-so-common names!
Thanks!

Is it pronounced nor-rah? In which case I've only ever seen it spelt Nora, I didn't know it had an H. I like it & named my keyboard it Smile

mammabear4 · 26/11/2013 07:58

Yep just the same as Nora but with an H on the end! We both love Norah Jones and I still worry about Nora having the connotations of Nora Batty... Which I think is all my mother/grandmother sees! I think in my own head I think that the H on the end differentiates it... Although said out loud they are both pronounced the same!

I think it's like Maureen is to us, in that to your Mum's generation it's an ugly old lady's name. I really like it, too - unusual and pretty.

Nina is similar and less controversial, maybe?

NoAddedSuga · 26/11/2013 08:04

My first thought was bloody nora!

Here kitty kitty (as if you wanted a cat to come to you) came to mind about the name kitty.

Theres so many great names out there

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 26/11/2013 08:06

It's cool with the h.
It's so not cool without.

Wishfulmakeupping · 26/11/2013 08:06

I like Norah and Kitty. perfect is right that's the way your older family members will view those names my mum and grandma thought I'd lost the plot when I said I liked Elsie and Edith for potential names for dd. Try not to let other opinions put you off to be honest you'd be better bit telling until baby comes I still remember my mil face when I said what did actually become dd name so I know she doesn't like it luckily that wasn't enough to put me off as I love it

hatebeak · 26/11/2013 10:49

Really love Norah. It's beautiful. Quite popular in the US, I think?
How about Audrey, Lydia, Leonie, Helena, Cora, Josie, Sarah, Maude, Jenny?

YesAnastasia · 26/11/2013 10:53

I love it. I'd have Penelope if I have a girl so I can shorten it to Nelly.

I like most names that sound like they come from Enid Blyton (Even Enid! Love that) expect for Fanny.

My family would HATE both those names but they've hated most of my decisions for most of my life & they come around if I stick to my guns :)

YesAnastasia · 26/11/2013 10:54

except eye roll*

squoosh · 26/11/2013 12:00

I like it but prefer it spelt Nora.

Always reminds me of Nora Barnacle, James Joyce's wife and muse.

BunnyLebowski · 26/11/2013 12:03

I love Nora.

Don't like the H on the end though.

PuppyMonkey · 26/11/2013 12:04

See I must be a bit last generation because I still think it's an awful ugly name, sorry. But I like Kitty very much.

Janek · 26/11/2013 12:18

I have a Nora, not named after my nana as such, but i like that they have/had the same name iyswim. My mum didn't like it much, i don't think, but now (she's five) nora is nora and it suits her and she's wonderful, ergo the name is wonderful too. Gavel.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2013 12:21

I knew a Norah who hated it so much she went by her middle name all her life - until the last year when the NHS couldn't cope with this concept and insisted on using it. I also knew an Elsie who hated her name because 'it sounded like a housemaid' - but her middle name was worse so she was stuck with it. But whereas Elsie (and Edith) are pretty names, Norah isn't as nice. (it's a good name for a girl pup - like Gnasher...)

How about Eleanor?

squoosh · 26/11/2013 12:24

Now Eleanor really isn't a very pretty name.

iHateMrTumble · 26/11/2013 12:28

Love Norah and Kitty!!
But they are so different from each other I think your taste is varied anyway.
Someone on here mentioned they knew a grown up Elfie and she was a really cool girl, they wanted to use it but felt weird about it because they new one I think its quite quirky like Kitty.
I see Norah as quite classic even though its not common like Maeve, Orlaith, Erin.

mammabear4 · 26/11/2013 12:56

Thanks ladies all these opinions are great - I think it's going to be one of those names that people are going to have mixed opinions. Janek I love what you said about your daughter, it is a good point that they do just end up becoming their names and suiting them.

What does everyone think of Eleanor/Eleanora as a "Sunday best" name to pacify grandparents and we can just call her Norah for a nn, introduce her to others as such etc, and family who aren't so keen can just call her her long name?

OP posts:
squoosh · 26/11/2013 13:02

Sorry but I really disagree with that, you calling her one thing and disapproving relatives calling her by a separate name entirely. You really shouldn't feel the need to pacify anyone, they had their baby naming chances back when you were born, you two get to choose your own child's name. By yourselves.

KateCroydon · 26/11/2013 13:19

Makes me think of the mimismartypants blog. Her (ace) daughter is called Nora.

womma · 26/11/2013 13:26

I think Nora/Norah is tops

Arcadian · 26/11/2013 16:18

I love Norah, it's very close to the top of my list.

A very similar one I also love is Vera.

In fact, Vera has the edge over Norah for me!

mammabear4 · 26/11/2013 16:47

squoosh I know what you mean but DP and I both love Eleanor and Eleanora too - just prefer Norah in its own right!
Vera is nice but I don't think it's for me! I adore Edith and Elsie, but felt like Edith was too many "ee"s with the "green" in surname. Kitty was my great-grandmother's name which is probably why I class it as old fashioned rather than quirky!

Any more suggestions?? I was also thinking along the lines of Martha... Beatrice... etc?

Elsie is coming back. I love it.

nooka · 27/11/2013 04:13

I prefer Eleanora because it's quite elegant and has many possibilities (Nell, Elle, Ella, Ellie, Nora etc) whereas Nora/h is just Nora/h. If you like both then I think you shoudl go for it.
