Not for me, for a friend's baby. She loves the name, I think it's gorgeous, but she's wondering if people might find it a bit dated.
What do you think?

Is that the spelling? Tamasin?

And is it pronounced as Tamsin, or Tam-a-zin?

If it is Tamsin, then I don't really think of it as too dated. I wouldn't choose it personally because it would forever remind me of Tamsin Outhwaite (who I can't abideBlush), but there's nothing wrong with the name as such.

Lovely. Like Tamasin Day Lewis.

Bakingtins · 20/11/2013 12:08

I'd assume she couldn't spell Tamsin. I don't think it is dated though.

I have several cookbooks by Tamasin Day Lewis, and there's definitely an 'a' in the middle. I think it looks much nicer than Tamsin. Not sure how my friend would spell it, just assumed she would use the a.

Never seen the extra A

Doubt she'd ever get it spelt right.

RevengeWiggle · 20/11/2013 12:18

How is it pronounced?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 20/11/2013 12:30

Like that Day Lewis woman who writes rather pretentiously about cooking and homey things?

I don't think it's dated because I'm not sure it's really a real name, is it? I've been trying to say it aloud without sounding like I'm just trying to say Tamsin and it doesn't work, sorry. A bit like being called Rebelcca or Laurora.

If she's in the sort of community where lots of people's children will be called rather arty and different names it'll probably be fine and people will get their heads round it. But everyone I know would just say "You mean Tamsin?" which I imagine would get rather boring rather quickly for everyone, and the child will end up as "Tam" forever. Would she be ok with that?

Arabesque1 · 20/11/2013 12:35

We're both Irish so I suppose we're used to pronouncing names with soft vowel sounds in the middle. I've been trying to imagine it in an English accent and yes, I can see how the a would be more pronounced. I actually find Tamasin easier to say than Tamsin which feels quite clipped to me.

Tamasin is a character in the Tudor set Shardlake novels. Definitely a real name.

I'm Irish too but find Tamsin easier to say, Tamasin has a slight stutter. But I do like it.

How about the spelling Tamasine?
