I love the name Gabrielle and would rather it wasn't shortened but what are the alternatives if it HAS to be shortened (if that makes sense!!)

Choosing a name like that, when you don't like the shortenings, is nothing short of madness. Unless you call her 'shortening you like most' from birth, she will get Gabs or Gabby.

woooooooobooo · 19/11/2013 22:05

I've known a Gabriella who was known as Bria and a Gabrielle who was Gabs

Mattissy · 19/11/2013 22:05

One of my dearest friends is Gabrielle, she gets Gai (pronounced Gay) in every day life and GiGi from a few closer people.

I love Gabby though.

nichib83 · 19/11/2013 22:06

I disagree! Kids normally tend to be called by what their parents set as a shortening. I wouldn't use Gabby or gabs, hence the question lol!

You will lose all control of the nn once she goes to school so if you really hate Gabby then I'd choose a different name.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 19/11/2013 22:21

My Gabriella is called Gabriella. Shortened versions are not compulsory.
However I do refer to her as G in texts / emails etc

Sorry but if you don't like the nn then I think you should remove the name from your list and try and find another. You can't control these things at all esp once they start school.

Agree that it is a lovely name, however I don't like the nn either.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/11/2013 22:28

My DDs friend is known as Gablar and Gabs. They are teens.

Neither of which her parents call her. I cannot imagine her as a Gabriella. It is a lovely name, not sure their nns are so lovely.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/11/2013 22:29

My two have both opted for different versions of their names since starting school. Luckily I like all the variants, but wouldn't have picked any name where I didn't.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/11/2013 22:30

Soz. Predictive text. She is a Gabrielle

sandiy · 19/11/2013 22:30

Coco as in the fabulous Gabrielle "coco" Chanel.

FunnyRunner · 19/11/2013 22:30

I know a Gabsi.

SparklyFucker · 19/11/2013 22:32

Bree or Gabe. I know a female Gabe, I think her parents may have wanted a boy, as her name is Gabriel...

cloggal · 20/11/2013 16:52

I know a Bria whose name is Gabriela.

Greensleeves · 20/11/2013 16:58

Bibi

lljkk · 20/11/2013 17:03

"He's Matthew, NOT Matt!" proclaimed my aunt upon birth of her son. And she still only calls him Matthew.
We all call him Matt now (age 32). It's what he prefers.

Gabs, Gay (yes I know a woman called Gay).

Bakingtins · 20/11/2013 17:04

If you hate the obvious NNs then don't choose the name. You can probably get family to call her whatever NN (or the full version) you choose, but once she gets to school she will inevitably be Gabby.
