Nicknames for Rebecca that aren't Becky/Becca?

Hi,

DH and I really like Rebecca as a name but I really don't like Becky or Becca as a nickname. I just think that even if I always say Rebecca it's so long that others won't and Becky is an inevitability. Can anyone think of any (pretty) alternatives that we could use?

Thanks
xxx

I'm also Rebecca, as a teen I went through a phase of BecciGrin
I now hate any form of becky and if people ask my name I always say Rebecca, however I always get called Bec. I hate Bec Sad

RightInTheKisser · 18/11/2013 20:32

My friend Rebecca has always been Ruby. From Ruby Recca- Rebecca...obviously!

Oakmaiden · 18/11/2013 20:37

Shoutymomma - why Freckle?

Shoutymomma · 18/11/2013 20:40

In Bristol, words ending in A get an L put on the end of them, so
Rebeccal Freckle. :)

Oakmaiden · 18/11/2013 20:45

That's interesting. I am a Rebecca, and my family call me Freckles. They went Rebecca-Becka-Beckles-Freckles. I thought they were fairly unique in twisting the name like that, but apparently not :)

ps I don't have Freckles.

Shoutymomma · 18/11/2013 20:57

We're just left-field! X

WeileWeileWaile · 18/11/2013 21:02

My sister was given the nickname Marbecca - I think regardless of the name you'll get some kind of nn/shortening.

I call DS Joxer and that's nothing like his actual name.

CocktailQueen · 18/11/2013 21:05

I have a 10yo Rebecca and have always called her Becca. Never ever Becky. Eurgh. Now she prefers to call herself Bex. and that's what her friends call her too. We also call her Becca-boo, Boo, Bexter...

JulietBravo81 · 18/11/2013 21:35

I'm a Rebecca and I get Becky whether I like it or not (which I don't) people just presume and call it me. I have never ever introduced myself as that and tell people I hate it but still get it Sad

greeneyes1978 · 18/11/2013 22:09

I know two (adult) Rebeccas who are both known by their full name all the time if that helps.

HesMyLobster · 18/11/2013 22:18

I have a DD11 who is Rebecca, but to most friends and family she is Boo.
It happened by accident really, but she loves her nn and it really suits her.
She recently started secondary school and has had to learn how to politely correct her teachers who all seem to want to call her Becky, which she doesn't like.

gwenniebee · 18/11/2013 22:23

I know an (adult) Rebecca who suddenly decided to call herself Rebbles. Wasn't sure about that, myself.

looki · 18/11/2013 22:54

I think its quite a nice name but the inevitable nicknames turn me off it. I think you can minimize the abbreviations to a certain age and after that, you lose 'control' so to speak.

Even if your DD corrects people, there will be some that when they know the owner doesn't like a nickname will pointedly use it to get under the owner's skin (my own family are terrific at this).

For this reason, I would be hesitant to use a name when you truly dislike the nicknames. I have recently ruled out a name myself for this reason.

squoosh · 19/11/2013 01:22

One of my best friends is called Rebecca and no one has ever called her Becky. She generally goes by ummm.................Rebecca! or Beck sometimes.

veryspickandspan · 19/11/2013 01:31

Ha ha - Melissa went through school as Missy, now known as Mel. You name em then throw it to the wind....Alan answers to Azlan, Heather to Hev Bear ...

mirry2 · 19/11/2013 01:33

Rebs or Rebbie?

GrandstandingBlueTit · 19/11/2013 07:52

People will call you what they want, regardless. Years of having my nice name shortened to the awful 'Izzy' confirm that.

Having said that, my Dad has a name that comes with a variety of abbreviations and it is never shortened.

nooka · 19/11/2013 08:02

As an adult you can choose what you are called, but you do need to be quite firm about it. I simply don't respond when people try the obvious shortening of my name, and they very rarely do it twice. However it is an unusual name so perhaps easier.

The problem with calling your dd a name with a very common shortening is not so much that other people may call her that, it is that she will decide that's what she wants to be called.

So if you really don't like Becca/Becky then Rebecca is probably not a good choice, however much you like it.

goodtimesinbontemps · 19/11/2013 08:05

Dn is Rebecca and is generally called Rebecca or Becca, never Becky thank goodness because I really dislike that nn. I like the name Rebecca but don't like any of the usual nicknames. Someone said Ruby above which is lovely but to my mind its a completely different name.

mimbleandlittlemy · 19/11/2013 17:57

I am a Rebecca. People who shorten it don't make the same mistake twice Grin

Mossyoakgirl239 · 04/10/2015 18:29

My name is Rebecca and I don't like Becky and becca is ok but I go by Rebecca and sometimes my friends call me rebbie

sooperdooper · 04/10/2015 18:36

Your Dd could grow up and decide herself she wants to be Becky or Becs or whatever variation she wants - if you don't like those versions dont pick the name, because you simply can't control what she might decide once she's old enough to choose herself

SmugairleRoin · 04/10/2015 18:53

As pps have said, if you don't like Becky or Becca don't use Rebecca. You might hate those nicknames, but it will be her name and she may well decide to use those.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 04/10/2015 19:21

Avoid a name if you don't like the potential nns. All very well you not liking Becky or Becca, but the bottom line is. It's not your name. You can dictate to your dd what name she uses. If she wants Becky as a nn. Then tough!. Like I said it's her name.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 04/10/2015 19:22

*can't dictate not can dictate.
