Weird on its own? I don't like Bartholemew or Ptolomey, but think Tolly is just lovely! Any thoughts?

Awwwww, The Children of Green Knowe, love it. The book that is, alas I cannot permit you to saddle a boy with Tolly as their full name. Find a 'proper' name and use Tolly as his nickname till his voice has dropped and he gets his first spot and he hisses 'don't call me Tolly' when you're out in public together.

HoneyandRum · 16/11/2013 05:42

Sorry don't like it

YoDiggity · 16/11/2013 05:54

I've just had to google Green Knowe and given my age and my voracious reading habits as a child I am absolutely amazed that I have never heard of this books. Confused

Anyway, I think Bartholemew and Ptolemy are both absolutely awful names, so glad you are not thinking of using those, and I'm not keen on Toseland either, so I think the Thomas Oliver suggestion is a very good one. They are not wildly interesting on their own but they are inoffensive, solid, and they serve a purpose by combining as Tolly. If he chooses to outgrow Tolly he can be Tom.

But you've got a problem if you ever get a job transfer to Scotland. Grin

KateCroydon · 16/11/2013 08:25

This is a bit of a stretch, but the same person is called both Bartholomew and Nathaniel in the Bible so you could sort of get Tolly from Nathaniel.

Levantine · 16/11/2013 08:28

I wanted a child called Tolly when i was a child because of Green Knowe. I actually quite like Bartholomew

Locketjuice · 16/11/2013 08:31

Tilly with an auto correct, sorry

CarryOnDancing · 16/11/2013 08:32

I want to like it but it sounds like a character who would have been on Biker Grove.

LittleOldWineDrinker · 16/11/2013 08:37

I'm from the Scottish Borders and toley = shite there too. Sorry.

weaselinthenight · 16/11/2013 11:04

A character on Byker Grove??! Hilarious.

How is the Scottish jobby version pronounced? It looks like Toe-ley to me, whereas Tolly has a short 'o'.

Weasel It can be a bit in between, so In have seen the name Bobby written "phonetically" as "Boabby"

Vatta · 16/11/2013 11:26

Tolliver is a surname but you could use that.

Tikkamasala · 16/11/2013 12:45

Tolliver?
