This will be my last thread,I promise...then I will leave you all in peace! Grin

So we had decided on Flora for a girl, and Zephyr for a boy.

We both love these names, which,is,if you've seen any of my previous threads, quite frankly a fricking miracle.

Until last night...when someone said Flora, and I thought they'd said Laura

I don't want a DD called Laura? No Flora!

Help me.

I don't think this should be a big deal, I have never misheard Flora as Laura personally (not that I know any Floras but my cousin was considering it so have heard it crop up in conversation.) Both are nice names anyway, and every name has the potential to be misheard as something else (when my daughter was 2 a father christmas elf misheard her name as riley - in no way a similar type of name and also to my mind male - to my horror, but this has not occurred again!)

I really like Zephyr but would never be brave enough to use it!

grizzabellia · 13/11/2013 09:17

Oops, just saw it was you that misheard! - I still wouldn't worry though, they are quite different names.

lchats · 13/11/2013 09:58

Over thinking - I recognise this as I am the biggest over thinker I know Grin

Flora is beautiful, different but not unusual, and timeless... Go for it!

Thurlow · 13/11/2013 10:00

Overthinking. DD's name is quite often mispronounced, in it's long and short form, by people who have half heard it and go for the slightly more popular similar instead. It's not the end of the world, and shouldn't change your thinking.

curlew · 13/11/2013 10:25

Frankly, if you can live with "Sorry, I didn't quite catch that-ah, Zephyr that's unusual" I can't see why you would have a problem with "oh, sorry, Flora - I thought you said Laura" Grin

maishoffwcingras · 13/11/2013 10:30

you do make me laugh Grin. When's this bloomin baby due so you can put us all out of our misery Wink?

I know a Flora, have never even thought of it as being similar to Laura! Anyway the au sound is longer I think. Don't worry about it, it's a lovely name

(btw how do you pronounce Zephyr?)

Bowlersarm · 13/11/2013 10:33

Overthinking!

Please don't change your mind. I love both those names.

Meringue33 · 13/11/2013 10:46

Thought Flora was pronounced Floh-ra?

Lubiloo · 13/11/2013 12:38

Love both your names! Zephyr is cool and Flora is lovely. I'm sure both names will be pronounced as you like once you tell people.

Rosencrantz · 13/11/2013 13:41

I think if can get past the margarine thing, you should stick with Flora.

Margarine will be the biggest challenge Flora faces! If that's okay, all other mishearings are ok.

Kveta · 13/11/2013 13:46

from the personal experience of a friend I would say that the name Flora is misheard as Fiona, Laura, Lorna, and on one memorable occasion, Rory - and it is rarely spelled Flora on post. However, it does remain an unusual name, if you can get past the bastard margarine association.

mrspremise · 13/11/2013 13:54

Grin at 'Rory'...

squoosh · 13/11/2013 13:56

I can't wait till Zeflora is born.

Rhubarbgarden · 13/11/2013 19:54

Over thinking. People saying "Bless you" after Zephyr will be a bigger problem.

Flora is beautiful

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 13/11/2013 20:22

Okay....I'm sticking with Flora.

It is beautiful, and underused....and Not At All like Laura....

At all.
