We had a family vote excluding any name that DH and I didn't both like and let the kids throw in their preferences too.

3rd Baby.
No theme to DS's names, one scottish with gaelic spelling, one hippy nature name.
Last name is one of the star signs. V.

Also not keen on Ramsay or Sawyer ("saw yer v_" sounds vaguely rude for some reason) but other boy names are nice. Elliot always my favourite, Tor more unusual. If you're in Devon people might think you've made a Brooklyn Beckham type name decision!

Mattissy · 13/11/2013 12:47

Tamar, reminds me of Tamwar off Eastenders.

nevergoogle · 13/11/2013 15:07

Ah but we are in devon, but baby not conceived on dartmoor. Brrrr.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/11/2013 13:07

Ha! Well how about Tavy? Another river but I think it would make a good name for a boy.

nevergoogle · 14/11/2013 13:18

There's the Brutus stone in Totnes, but I'm thinking no to Brutus. Smile

Dart, Tamar, Tor?

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/11/2013 14:47

Tor is cool. I know a Carn as well?

Rhubarbgarden · 14/11/2013 16:05

Edith, Iris or Amy. In that order of preference.

I rather like Tor.

HyvaPaiva · 14/11/2013 16:09

Hester and Ramsay. Love.

Tillyscoutsmum · 14/11/2013 16:10

Edith. Edith. Edith!! Smile

I do like Amy as well.

Hmmmmm. Boys names. None are jumping out as living up to your other boys names tbh Confused Ted is the best IMHO

Fifibluebell · 14/11/2013 17:59

Adelaide and Thomas

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 14/11/2013 18:03

I like Orla and Iris from your narrowed shortlist. I would go with Orla with Orla over Orlaith unless you are in Ireland because English people will say Or-layth. And that could get wearing. It's also the more modern and popular spelling in Ireland. I'd say it's almost become a bit of a political point to use one of the older spellings.

None of the boy names are jumping out I'm afraid. Elliot is probably my favourite.

Catchhimatwhat · 14/11/2013 18:24

I like these:
Amy
Edith
Hester
Iris
Orla

Ted
Thomas
William

nevergoogle · 14/11/2013 20:16

Tillyscoutsmum, thanks, I am rather partial to the boys names too. Ted is my favourite of the boys names. Otherwise a bit stumped.

Hippy surname bit of a bind at times.

The other vetoed boys names (vetoed by kids and DH) were:
Angus
Art
Ciaran
Jude
Seamus

The children want:
Bradley
Ussain
Mo
Sebastian

Ideally with Wiggins, Bolt, Farah and Vettel as middle names. Hmm

OP posts:
PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 14/11/2013 20:25

I love Seamus.

nevergoogle · 14/11/2013 20:27

My reasons for liking Orlaith vs Orla (although am more than happy for a girl to use anglicized spelling as and when) is that it's so nice when you do have a link to a culture or language to be able to use a name associate with it, or to use the correct spelling.

I see beautiful sanskrit or african names but don't feel able to use them as I have no connection. But to gaelic I do.

Also as DS1 had gaelic spelling of name, it would make sense to do the same. DS1 often has his named spelled wrong, but he sees it as a way of filtering people who actually know him, or care enough to spell his name correctly. He's developed eye rolling at invitations spelled wrong but doesn't make a fuss.

Orla and Ted

Varya · 14/11/2013 20:36

Dorian
Warwick

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 14/11/2013 20:40

That is true. Although I don't think it's a matter of 'correct' spelling of Orla any longer. There are also lots of different spellings. There are a couple of versions with d's and g's that I can never remember. It is more like 'tradional and modern' if anything. The thing I found interesting is that Orla is the spelling most favoured in the Republic of Ireland these days if you look at the name charts there.

Though if you have used a traditional spelling of another name I can see why you would want to match. I suppose the real problem with Orla is that it isn't just spelling. Non-Irish people will pretty much forever hear Orlaith in their head, even if they learn it isn't.

Tillyscoutsmum · 14/11/2013 21:27

Love Angus, Art and Jude. Tell DH and the kids they are wrong! Wink I had to allow Cavendish as a second mn in order to get my way with Fergus Grin

nevergoogle · 14/11/2013 21:38

the vote consisted of me reading out my list and them reacting.

tumbleweed lots of names followed by giggles.

compromise sucks.

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 14/11/2013 21:45

nevergoogle · 14/11/2013 21:53
