I've got a shortlist of names I like, a lot seem quite French (not sure why). And I'd prefer not to have a name that is too overused or popular)

LO will be our first, so no siblings to coordinate with, our surname is quite short.

I'd love some feedback on my list, and maybe some alternatives if you can think of any.

Margot
Florence (a bit popular now but it's a family name)
Sylvie (or Sylvia, also a family name)
Odette
Dinah
Clara
Rosa
Greta
Cordelia
Grace
Dulcie
Genevieve

DH is giving me no feedback on this list at all so I'm on my own here for the minute!

I think they all fall between fine and lovely on the name scale. Probably less keen on Dulcie (too sweet), Sylvie and Odette, but really like Greta, Genevieve and Margot. How about Colette, Cora, Rosalind, Celeste?

tracypenisbeaker · 07/11/2013 13:28

J'adore Dulcie! That's lovely. None of the others really stand out for me, but what about Clemence?

MrsOB · 07/11/2013 13:32

Love Florence and DC2 would certainly have been Florence had David Cameron not nicked it a week before her arrival!!

Albiebee · 07/11/2013 15:25

Cora and Celeste were both on my list too and then got crossed off for some reason, hatebeak they're both lovely.

Maybe I'm spoilt for choice? There are so many beautiful girls names but far fewer good boys names, a boy would have been easier!

Clemence is great too, but I think that will be a step too far for DH. (so will Dulcie TBH, even though I love it)

Yes, MrsOB I've liked Florence for a long time, it was my Grandmother's name, Flora for short, but it does seem to be all over the place at the moment. Maybe it would be good for a middle name though.

Keep 'em coming!

My favourite name that DP keeps vetoing is Camille

Spaghettinetti · 07/11/2013 23:07

Sylvie and Odette are very pretty names. I've never met anyone with either of these names. Celeste is nice too. I like Cordelia, but it reminds me of King Lear and that ended badly...Florence is very very popular, flora on the other hand is not so popular and would make a really lovely middle name if not a first name. I'm really not keen on Margot or Greta...I find them a bit too trendy in a way..

Ooo what about Celia, Cecile, Cecilia...?

fizzly · 07/11/2013 23:30

Love Sylvie. Increasingly like Cordelia.
Have you considered Elodie?

Thewhingingdefective · 07/11/2013 23:35

They're all names I like and considered for my own DDs, although didn't use any of them!

Florence, Clara and Sylvie are my favourites but all are lovely.

Thewhingingdefective · 07/11/2013 23:37

MrsOB - snap! Florence was a family name for us and top of our list but the Camerons using it put us right off.

TheDoctrineOfWho · 07/11/2013 23:40

Nina
Ottilie

lottiegarbanzo · 07/11/2013 23:50

I really like Camille (not so much Camilla). Cecilia is nice too.

Odette sounds very 40s-50s film star to me. A bit too harsh and malleable though - odd-ette, odour-ette, oh-debt.

Greta is also a bit brittle.

Sylvie, Clara and Genevieve my favourites.

Dinah and Margot seem quite 'brave' now but I bet they'll be fashionable in ten years (as Edwardian granny-chic moves into the 20s and 30s). I think they're rather marvellous, simple, unfrilly but feminine.

Mutteroo · 08/11/2013 00:19

Sylvie seems to becoming increasing popular & I see you don't particularly want popular names. Also I know a lot of adults with this name (most over 60, one in her 30s) & find it hard to imagine a baby with the name?

Clara & Rosa are my favs from your list. I've seen the name Rosalie on here & that's a name that is really growing on me. Genevieve is also extremely pretty. What about Vivienne or Marriane? Both similar to Genevieve & not excessively popular (yet).

Congrats on your pregnancy OP!

CityGal29 · 08/11/2013 10:54

Avoid fFlorence , very popular.
Genevieve is a wonderful name.
How about Delphine or Elodie? Also like Celandine. All easy to spell and rare Grin

MrsVegardYlvisaker · 08/11/2013 11:35

Grace is popular, top 20. All of the names on your list are classy and I would use any of them except Greta (a little clunky and ugly) and Dinah (like the name but the character in the Bible was raped).

halecromp · 08/11/2013 12:47

Love Sylvie/Sylvia, Rosa and Genevieve

BrianWont · 08/11/2013 12:50

Margot is a superb name.

DiamondsAndRust · 08/11/2013 19:57

Great list - like most of these. Grace and Florence's popularity would put me off somewhat (maybe use Florence as a mn?), like the Swan Lake connection with Odette but can't help focusing in on the 'Odd' part, and have similar thoughts to lottiegarbanzo about Dinah and Margot (plus with Dinah I kind of hear 'Diner' and imagine an elderly American waitress with a beehive!)

The rest are all lovely. In order from fave to least fave:

Greta - gorgeous and sophisticated, cute on a child and strong on an adult - one of my absolute favourites
Rosa - pretty and classy. Much prefer to Rose/Rosie etc.
Genevieve - pretty and a bit exotic without being too 'out there'. Lots of good NN possibilities too.
Clara - very nice. I think of the girl in the Nutcracker.

Dulcie - nice but feels a bit insubstantial
Sylvie - pretty sound, but it does make me think of someone much older (elderly friend of parents was called this, which may colour my judgement!)

Cordelia - like it, but possibly a bit fussy for me

Albiebee · 10/11/2013 13:39

Thanks everyone, been away from the laptop moving house (grumble grumble).

Sylvie is my top choice currently, Margot is definitely in the running though too. Maybe DH will finally stick his oar in and plump for one..

maybe I'll ignore him and just choose my favourite anyway!

I love Odette and Greta. I can't pronounce Genevieve. Will that bug you?
