Aurla?

It's the Scottish spelling of Orla or Orlaith (irish) but it's not as commonly used spelled this way.

Just want to make sure I'm not lumbering my child with an confusing name!

Orrr-la. It's very pretty.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/11/2013 11:06

With difficulty.

I wouldn't know if it was or-la (though somehow I'd emphasise the r more, because au already gives the or sound, so au r seems more like oar-la)

Or, ow-r-la.

Weeantwee · 04/11/2013 11:27

I assumed it was pronounced like Orla.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2013 11:28

I'd pronounce it Orla unless told otherwise

Artandco · 04/11/2013 11:29

I would say urr- la

Beachballfamily · 04/11/2013 11:59

Orrrla, but I'd worry I was getting it wrong!

DancingLady · 04/11/2013 12:01

I'd say 'Orla', and wonder why it was spelled differently...

HotCrossPun · 04/11/2013 13:29

Thanks all! I prefer the Scottish spelling so I think we will go with that one.

I hoped people would be able to pronounce it because its like Aura but with an 'L'.

OP posts:
lottiegarbanzo · 04/11/2013 14:22

I pronounce Aur(l)a differently from Orla though.

Aura - Or-ra, so Orr-la, whereas Orla has only one r sound.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/11/2013 14:25

I'm speaking in 'standard English' btw, I think it's to do with the way we don't always pronounce Rs properly, then shove them in where they're not needed.

I'd be affecting a Somerset accent to pronounce Aurla - extra rrr sound, that I don't usually make.

To me, Aura has a 'proper R sound' in it whereas Orla dosen't quite.

BOF · 04/11/2013 14:28

In Scotland they'd add the r sound into Orla anyway Grin

HotCrossPun · 04/11/2013 14:34

I never thought about how it would sound in an English accent. I suppose any name is going to be said slightly different around the country though.

I say Or-Lah. The only reason I don't want to spell it like 'Orla' is because it looks like Olga. And we have a surname with the same number of letters.

Geez, I'm putting way too much thought into this. Grin

Jacksterbear · 04/11/2013 14:38

I'd assume it was pronounced "Ow-lah" (as in "ow that hurts!").

I think Orla looks nicer.

curlew · 04/11/2013 14:39

I would ask.

And people asking how to say your name gets very boring.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/11/2013 14:41

Well anyway, it will make sense to people around you and, once they've heard it once, other people will get it right.

Or you could call her Aurora!

loren986 · 04/11/2013 21:41

I would definitely say "orla", the word "aura" is similar to Aurla and people don't have any trouble knowing how to pronounce that.

Sunnysummer · 05/11/2013 02:18

I'd say OW-rr-la, just because I'd assume that if it was meant to be pronounced like Orla then they would have spelt it the more usual way (where we live, I realise that might be different up your way!)

elcranko · 05/11/2013 08:18

I would assume it was pronounced like Orla.

squoosh · 05/11/2013 16:28

Aurla looks made up to me. Also, I'd assume it was pronounced OW-er-la too, much like the word aural.

I think they'll be in for a lifetime of 'yes it sounds just like Orla but actually it's spelt....................'

Orla is better.

Anjou · 05/11/2013 22:45

It's very nearly 'Aural', so I would pronounce it 'Ow-rla', which feels quite awkward. I agree with SunnySummer: I'd think that if you'd wanted it to be pronounced 'Or-la', you'd spell it Orla. Sorry.

Coupon · 06/11/2013 00:27

Ow-ah-la

funnyflowersky · 06/11/2013 16:05

Urh-la.

Orla looks much nicer.

Marli1980 · 10/11/2013 15:13

Orla
