Do you think Florence will become dated?

I would love to use Florence but I am afraid it may become one of those dated names that everyone is sick of hearing.

I'm not from Ireland and it is not at all common over here, I think something like 15 babies born last year with the name. However I don't want a name of the moment!.....advice please???

That should be I AM FROM Ireland....duh!

Probably not in Ireland as it isn't the type of name that will hugely catch on there in my opinion. However if your daughter ever lives in the UK she will probably meet a fair few Florences of her own age.

The last time it was this popular was about 100 years ago so yes, I would call it a name of the moment.

ImAFrequentNameChanger · 23/10/2013 13:05

Yes I think it will in England, not sure about Ireland though. The names like Florence, Olivia, Ellie, Lilly and the -May, -Rose's will be this generations Claire, Louise, Sarah, Kelly's.

ouryve · 23/10/2013 13:08

Even a currently fashionable name that does go out of favour will still be a name of your child's own generation, IYSWIM.

Being dated is the last thing I'd worry about with a name. What matters most is whether or not you like it and whether or not your DD is actually born a Florence.

It's a classic rather than a faddy name so it will last IMHO. It may become a little less popular again or it may stay popular for 100 years or more, there's no way of telling really.

NadiaWadia · 23/10/2013 15:16

To me, it's still dated from the last time round! (Victorian). Flora is nicer.

Lubiloo · 23/10/2013 16:04

Definitely! Until two years ago I did not know a single young Florence. Now I know 5 toddlers/babies named Florence. It is becoming trendy and will therefore eventually become untrendy/old fashioned.

macskater · 23/10/2013 16:08

I've only known one Florence in my entire life - am aged early 50s as is she. It is a really nice name, even when shortened to Flo.

Does it matter if a name goes out of fashion? I don't think any less of people whose name has gone out of fashion since the decade they were born. I just think it was a name of that era.

CluelessNewbie1 · 23/10/2013 16:10

Either way I think it's a lovely name FWIW

chattychattyboomba · 23/10/2013 21:53

Eep! It's on our top list for this baby if it's another girl. I think it was fairly forgotten for a while but it's popular because it's a lovely name and people have just been reminded of it again. I am worried as it's DH's close mate's daughters middle name (if you can follow!) He wouldn't give a hoot (probably be flattered) but I think his wife would be annoyed...but it's very popular right now.

I hate to say it but yes, it's this generation's Claire.

qumquat · 25/10/2013 10:39

All names date as they wax and wane in popularity.

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/10/2013 10:42

It is getting very popular. I know of two locally. But she's your baby it's up to you and use the name you love :)

dreamingofsun · 25/10/2013 10:52

its a lovely name and for your daughter having one of her generation is good - i have one from another generation which i hate. we chose names partly because we didn't want something run of the mill and friends copied us.....so there's no guarantees on naming. you might choose something which then becomes popular anyway.....our oldest has a pretty well know, but little used name which i now see cropping up on here quite regularly

NotYoMomma · 25/10/2013 16:28

yes I think it will date

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 25/10/2013 20:41

I have a dated name - it's not that big a deal. I like being 'placed in context' Grin

But my name isn't hugely common - reasonably well used but definitely not a Kelly, Claire, Emma, Olivia or Sarah.

I don't think Florence will become a Claire - it's too MC and too marmite. Amelia I'm not surprised about but Florence will never be as widespread.

mewkins · 25/10/2013 22:29

This generation's Claire?? Surely no bad thing! Wink
How about calling her Claire and bucking the trend? She can then call her own dd Florence when it's out of fashion again..

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 25/10/2013 22:45

I know a 95 year old Claire. It seems very sophisticated on an older lady.

squoosh · 25/10/2013 22:49

I like the name Claire, it will come back in a big way at some point.

scarlettsmummy2 · 25/10/2013 22:50

I have a Florence and am from NI- haven't met any others over there, but one more at my daughters school. I haven't had any negative comments about it!

Tikkamasala · 26/10/2013 00:29

I think any name that comes from almost nowhere on the charts and becomes really popular will date itself to that era, so yes I think it will. Same with Evie, Isla, Amelia, Lily... However as above if you love the name not sure if it is definitely a problem.

3boysgirlontheway · 26/10/2013 03:45

We are Irish and our Florence was one of the 14 born in Ireland last year. We have since moved to Australia, and between Ireland and Australia have yet to meet another Florence under 40.

Our Florence would have been Florence even if she was born 20 years ago, she was partly named after her great grandmother.

I don't care if it "dates" we love it, and it is so totally her.

If you love the name it does not matter.
