Back to Jacob...

I have asked about this name before, then gone off it, now found out that DH really likes it and likes very little else.

Any thoughts re: 1. similar names and 2. is it really as popular as all that, bearing in mind I don't know any and have a 5 year old dd?

We have a very common surname so any good suggestions for middle names also welcome.

Do you like it as a name?

Final question, is Jacob the same name as James? To put it another way, is James the English version of Jacob? I just wondered this as I know the latin for James is Jacobus, hence the Jacobite rebellion etc. I would like it more if I thought this was the case as gives it more associations - I know of lots of Jameses but no Jacobs. I don't actually like the name James, and with our surname it would make the name of a very famous person....

I think Jacob is a biblical name isn't it?
We've got a Jacob and tbh I still love the name. It gets lots of compliments as well. We used Elliot as a middle name and found it flows very nicely with our surname.

Littlecherublegs · 21/10/2013 12:17

I love it and would probably use it if it went with our surname.

Similar names to me include Joseph, Caleb, Gabriel, Joel, Isaac.

I have only come across 2 recently - one aged 1yr and one aged 5 yrs.

Middle name suggestions:
Nathaniel
Sebastian
Anthony
Marc
William
Theodore

Finally, I'm not sure about the Jacob / James connection - to me they are different names and I prefer Jacob as a first name.

Mim78 · 21/10/2013 13:25

Don't worry about the James connection - I've looked it up on line and they do come from the same root. Obviously they are different names, just like James is different from Jacques but wondered if they came from the same origin.

I like Joseph and Gabriel but cannot use them because they are the baby's uncle and my dd (Gabriella). I don't like Isaac, which is very similar, because it is old manny to me, but probably only because I knew an old man called this (friend of my grandparents - brought the best ever cake round once if that is of any interest).

I like Anthony but would make the baby's initials JAB which I'm not keen on. I would like to avoid a vowel as middle initial. I like William, which is DH's middle name, but is also my brother's name and the other brother might be offended!

Thanks for your help though!

I love it... But it is my surname so I'm biased Wink

we considered it for our #1 but when you actually read the bible story, Jacob was a slimy scheming lying GIT!!

We wanted biblical names and ended up with Isaac, which is much less common (he's now 18 and has only ever been the only Isaac in either of his schools)

later sprogs were Joshua, Jonathan & Lois, which are all Biblical, and, how sad is this, in Biblical Chronological order!!

Mim78 · 25/10/2013 11:45

Yes I don't like Jacob in the Bible either but wondered if I was being silly to worry about that too much. Not so much because of the business with his brother, but the favouritism among his sons!

Talking about naming in chronological order (and sons of Jacob) I know of two families which have four sons and the third is called Benjamin (just to explain Benjamin was Jacob's youngest son, and in France the youngest son in a family is often referred to as "the Benjamin"). Does this mean they really didn't want another son after the third, or do you think they just didn't know about it?

We are going with Jacob if we have a boy. I love it. Jake for short.

catinboots · 25/10/2013 13:45

I've got a 14 year old Jacob.

I don't mind it but I would change it if I could. I didn't learn about certain connotations with biblical names until about 5 years ago.

I think he looks like a Toby. Even he agrees Grin

SeraphinaSparklePants · 25/10/2013 13:46

I have a 14 week old Jacob.
He's the only one I know. I'm sure it is popular, but I think it varies depending on where you live.
I also have a 4 year old, and there are no Jacob's in his class at school.

SandyChick · 25/10/2013 15:13

I love it.

We have a Jacob but have always called him Jake.

I have always liked the name and knew if I was to ever have a boy that would be his name. We were totally stumped when ds2 came along tho. He didn't have a name for the first few days.
