It can be both. I know more male Rowan's than female, but only like it as a Girls name.

TombOfMummyBeerest · 21/10/2013 05:50

Both I'd say. I've only known a boy though.

flowery · 21/10/2013 06:30

Both. DS1 is Rowan but I've also known a female Rowan.

Iamanorangesmartie · 21/10/2013 06:40

Both, I knew a girl Rowan at school and she was lovely

ArabellaBeaumaris · 21/10/2013 06:54

Boy.

Although I know girl ones.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 21/10/2013 06:58

Both

daughterofafarmer · 21/10/2013 07:38

I went to school with a Rowan (girl) and my BIL is called Rohan.

Know of more girls called rowan than boys. But definitely unisex.

Lovely name.

notadoctor · 21/10/2013 08:03

Both. I love it for a girl.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 21/10/2013 08:41

Both, definitely. I've known a girl Rowan and a boy (well, man) who spells it Rohan. Lovely name, very evocative of celtic mists and legends etc without being frilly or over the top.

Stat · 21/10/2013 09:41

I've only heard it as a surname in real life, so it sounds odd as a first name to me.

In England/Wales it is more commonly given to boys than girls (449 boys given the name Rowan last year, compared to 74 girls).

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 09:43

I don't like it as a name...to me it is a tree.

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 09:44

I know (of) a Rowan and a Rowen and they are both female though

Amandine29 · 21/10/2013 09:47

Boy.

Jdub · 21/10/2013 09:51

boy.

Weegiemum · 21/10/2013 09:54

It's pronounced differently depending if it's for a boy or girl.

Boy - as in Rowan Atkinson
Girl - as the tree.

In Scotland it's more common for a girl, I certainly haven't met any boys with it. One of my dd1's best friends is Rowan, age 13

flowery · 21/10/2013 10:11

Rowan Atkinson, tree, and girl and boy Rowans all sound the same to me!

Female Rowan I knew pronounced it like Rowan Atkinson as do we for DS1, and I would definitely pronounce the tree the same way.

TenthMuse · 21/10/2013 11:15

Think it's genuinely unisex (statistically more common for boys though). Personally I love it for a girl. Love the nature connection, especially as the rowan is my favourite tree.

I would say it's slightly more masculine than feminine - though I do know one of each.

squoosh · 21/10/2013 12:39

Don't like it for boy or girl, sounds feeble.

Love the tree though.

itsnothingoriginal · 21/10/2013 14:27

Love it for a boy Smile

Not sure about it as a female name but that's probably because I only know boys called Rowan.

It's also a lovely tree!!

becko · 21/10/2013 14:31

I have a dd Rowan and obviously love it! We pronounce it the same as Rowan Atkinson. I never considered it for a boy but now wonder why as I think it's lovely for both - though am of course bias!

usualsuspect · 21/10/2013 14:32

Both

BuntyPenfold · 21/10/2013 22:45

My dd is Rowan. We know five more girls, and one boy. It's a small flowering tree, not very macho.

I also know a male Rohan which is more masculine IMO.
