Is Rowan a boy or a girl????

It can be both. I know more male Rowan's than female, but only like it as a Girls name.

Both. DS1 is Rowan but I've also known a female Rowan.

I went to school with a Rowan (girl) and my BIL is called Rohan.

Know of more girls called rowan than boys. But definitely unisex.

Both, definitely. I've known a girl Rowan and a boy (well, man) who spells it Rohan. Lovely name, very evocative of celtic mists and legends etc without being frilly or over the top.

I've only heard it as a surname in real life, so it sounds odd as a first name to me.

In England/Wales it is more commonly given to boys than girls (449 boys given the name Rowan last year, compared to 74 girls).

It's pronounced differently depending if it's for a boy or girl.

Boy - as in Rowan Atkinson
Girl - as the tree.

In Scotland it's more common for a girl, I certainly haven't met any boys with it. One of my dd1's best friends is Rowan, age 13

Rowan Atkinson, tree, and girl and boy Rowans all sound the same to me!

Female Rowan I knew pronounced it like Rowan Atkinson as do we for DS1, and I would definitely pronounce the tree the same way.

Think it's genuinely unisex (statistically more common for boys though). Personally I love it for a girl. Love the nature connection, especially as the rowan is my favourite tree.

I would say it's slightly more masculine than feminine - though I do know one of each.

Not sure about it as a female name but that's probably because I only know boys called Rowan.

It's also a lovely tree!!

I have a dd Rowan and obviously love it! We pronounce it the same as Rowan Atkinson. I never considered it for a boy but now wonder why as I think it's lovely for both - though am of course bias!

My dd is Rowan. We know five more girls, and one boy. It's a small flowering tree, not very macho.

I also know a male Rohan which is more masculine IMO.
