Is it possible to add a middle name after the child has been registered?

As the title suggests I'm thinking about adding a middle name to DS. He was born earlier this year, so obviously he has his birth certificate with the name we chose on.
However, our BIL has passed away recently and we'd like to honour him by using his name.
Is it possible to do this does anyone know?

You can't alter the birth certificate at all but you can change a name or add a name in (or take one out) by deed poll.

Yes, you can alter the birth certificate any time in the first year. After a year it's deed poll.

Alternatively are you planning on getting him christened? My SIL had to stick a mn on when DN was christened when she realised DN's given name was not a saint's name (therefore no saint's day presents!). So that's an option if you're planning a christening.

Not getting him christened but having a naming day if this makes a difference?

No difference really. If all your relatives will be there you could simply announce/use the middle name during naming ceremony so BIL will be honoured. Obviously if you want to make things formal then just amend birth certificate.

Thanks for the advice, think it will be a nice thing to do. Glad it's relatively straight forward!

Christenings and naming days don't make any difference to the legal name.

I get that Cupon, going to officially change birth certificate and announce it at naming day. Really pleased we can add the middle name.

contact the register office where your son was registered and ask for a change of name form. You can change the name up to a year after the birth was registered fairly simply by completing and returning the form.
The old name will always appear on the entry in the register and any subsequent certificates but the new name will appear in a box at the bottom of the certified copy and supersedes the name at the top.
