Do you need to be "posh" to have a Florence?

I mentioned to a friend this evening that Florence is in the running for DD2 to which she raised an eyebrow & said "Isn't that slightly highbrow".
We are more than likely going for Daisy(have posted quite a bit this week!!) but we are not completely decided yet.
Florence would win hands down except we just don't like the nicknames Flo, Florrie, Floss or Flossie or even Flee which Prince Harry's ex was known as... The reason I'm asking is it a posh name is simply beacuse we're not posh, we're as normal as can be & I don't want to give DD a name that is percieved to be something she's not. I know I'll get many replies saying a name is no indicator of social class etc which I completely agree with but I never considered Florence "highbrow", always considered it a lovely old name that has recently become en vogue again? I always wanted to give my children "classless" names which will be fine in all levels of society & I don't want to look pretentious or try hard by giving DD2 a "posh" name.Am I right or wrong with regards to Florence?

I love Florence, its a really beautiful "strong" name and you deffo don't need to be posh!

I've got a Molly but she's been called Florence since she was about 1 but I've no idea where it came from? She barely answers to Molly anymore!

Florence is not posh, but, if you don't like any of the nicknames then it's not the right name for you.

DD is Florence :)

I think over 5-10 years ago it was a "posh" name but it's very common (by which I mean usual) now and the trickle-down effect in baby names means it is no longer "posh".

I know a 9 yr old Florence from a comfortable upper-middle class family.

A guy I used to work with has just called his baby Florence and he is from a very working-class family, but would probably describe himself as middle class now.

Does that help?

It's not posh, it's 'normal'. But I agree with pp that if you don't like the nicknames then don't use it.

Thanks for the replies, yep always thought it was a normal name myself just one of those lovely old names that is fashionable again. Will report back to said friend that the public has spoken & it is not a "highbrow" name, love being right!! Yes agree that Florence is not for us due to us having a really strong dislike of the associated nicknames:( We are nearly 99% decided on Daisy now, getting excited!!!

Florence is a lovely name. So is Daisy. Good luck deciding and let us know what you choose!

This might be a bit late, but I don't think you have to be posh to pick any name! You can pick what you like.

I would like Florence myself if it wasn't for a girl I knew at Uni (so often the case with names) - I am not posh!
