and I'm president, there will be rules on names!!!

Ok reason for the rant?

as a teacher I've seen may beautiful and wonderful names in my classes.

My wife has a name that is unique and she has neither met nor heard of another.....

BUT

if you call your child a common name, then PLEASE SPELL IT RIGHT!!!!

PLEASE, not Kayte, not Patrisha and DELINITELY NOT Junathon!!

seriously, your child will not thank you for having to tell EVERY teacher, youth leader, employer and police officer that sorry, it's pronounced the same, but my mum couldn't spell!

But it is not always clear what is 'right'..?

Kathryn, Katherine, Katharine, Catherine, Catharine, Cathryn.....?

Finlay, Finley..?

Elliot, Elliott, Eliott..?

But I agree with you about giving children wonderful, beautiful and underused names! Makes life more interesting and much easier!!

There are some names that do have more than one common spelling for instance Clare and Claire. I think that people will ask which way you spell it in those cases.

However, once had a neighbour called Klair which was probably taking the biscuit and what OP is talking about.

Found this quite funny I must say.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/10/2013 18:23

I am inclined to agree.

Some names do have variations as sonnie pointed out but that is different to blatantly spelling a name incorrectly.

Though with Elliot - I tend to see Elliot as a first name, Elliott as a surname and Eliot as just wrong. I accept that could well be just me though.

What also boggles my mind is when I think a name can only have one pronounciation and then someone (usually my dp) says it differently, leaving me a bit Hmm about it.

Example - Dorian

I'd say Door-ee-un
He'd say - Dorry-un

Alis: I've also heard it 'Doh-ryan' Hmm

Lubiloo · 15/10/2013 13:09

Just as confusing is are the different pronunciations of some names e.g. Helena: is it HEL-ena or Hel-AYNA?

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/10/2013 13:24

Ra I really liked Dorian until I realised my DP and I couldn't say it in the same way. Doh-Ryan is hilarious! Grin

I'm right though aren't I?!

Lub

I'd say HEL-ena but actually prefer Hel-ayna.

When I'M president I will be outlawing excess punctuation and terrible grammar. OP, you'll be first in line for a hefty fine or maybe an adult learning course.

Sorry, just cannot work myself into a lather about the way anyone spells their name.
