What do you think of the name Alberto? DH is Italian, and this is one of his favourite names. Any suggestion as to how it would sound in English/Britain?

I like it and it's easy for an English speaker to pronounce and spell.

Marineblue · 08/10/2013 21:53

Thanks Coupon. my fear was - it's not easily associated to a silly tv show/series comical character is it? (I am not British either and don't always realise what is acceptable or what is an object of un in terms of names!)

Dh calls our dd Alberto after a frog on an ancient kids programme

I'd never heard of it before he mentioned it, not being as ancient as dh Grin so I don't think it'd be an issue.
I like it, also has lovely nickname potential in Albie not that I'm qualified to say that with the dd nicknamed after a frog

Marineblue · 08/10/2013 22:14

Lol, Melongena, I actually think that Alberto frog is quite cute Grin
I also like Albie (what about Bertie though?)

I'm British, it doesn't sound weird or silly to me. I'd recognise it as being Italian, but I'd be able to pronounce and spell it no problem.

Go for it!

I also immediately thought of Alberto the Frog!

DH is half Italian/half Spanish, DS is Alessandro Valentino, Tino for everyday.

bzoo · 08/10/2013 22:26

Like the name Aldo!
Alberto is nice too :)

Marineblue · 08/10/2013 22:49

We hesitate (well, DH, jury is still out for me) between Alberto and Giovanni. I like them both (Alberto for familial reasons, Giovanni because I like the sound of it.) but I would have preferred something that is completely "international", basically, the same in English, French and Italian.not easy to find! I thought of the frog. But I don't think anyone younger than mid 30s would.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 08/10/2013 22:53

I thought Alberto the frog too Grin but that's definitely a generational thing - today's kids would never have heard of him.

Marineblue · 08/10/2013 22:56

Wow there was a whole world of frogs named Alberto I completely ignored! I don't think it would be a problem in nursery, and anyway, I think it's cute associated with a little guy. I was more afraid of a character in Allo Allo or this kind of stuff (yes, I can sho my age too Grin)

sorry, I immediately thought frog too Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 08/10/2013 23:47

I'd never heard of Alberto frog - too old in my case!

I'm afraid I thought of Alberto Balsam shampoo.... but its a nice name.

I reckon brits could cope fine with Giovanni too nowadays.

Oriunda · 09/10/2013 12:21

DH is Italian I'm English. Our son is Cosmo (FIL is Cosimo) then english mn then Italian mn (v similar to Alberto). I think Alberto is really nice. Easy to pronounce in both languages/countries and much better than Giovanni which I personally find boring and in Italy seems that every man and his cane is called. Also pronunciation of Giovanni could be problematic. Alberto has lots of nn possibilities too.

notagiraffe · 09/10/2013 12:26

I love Alberto. Had an Italian boss called Alberto once. He was such a lovely man, and very stylish. Great name.

sonlypuppyfat · 09/10/2013 12:31

I thought of the shampoo too, sorry I don't like it, its like an old mans name with a bit added.

Oriunda · 09/10/2013 12:37

Doubt today's generation of kids will connect a brand of shampoo with Alberto!

sonlypuppyfat · 09/10/2013 12:47

I wonder if theres any kids called Vosene!

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 09/10/2013 13:14

Alberto the frog was great. He conducted the Amazing Animal Band, solved everyone's problems and liked milkshake.

Marineblue · 12/10/2013 18:48

I did not know about the shampoo! Mmm, might reconsider.
