Odd/unusual names

Just spending a happy morning on Baby Names slating other people's lovingly chosen names for their little prince or princess when it occurred to me that although we, as adults, often advise against an unusual weird or made up name because the poor child will have the piss ripped out of them, I have never known any of my children or their friends do so much as a double take at some of the more... 'exotic'... names of their acquaintances!

Is this because I live in multicultural south-east London where anything can and does go or are kids just much more accepting than adults?

In fact, the only name DS1 (9) and his friends have ever sniggered at is Fatjon (sp?), which I am told is a bona fide Chinese name although I have not managed to confirm this and am still somewhat sceptical

I think it is, but also I think parents influence their kids on the reaction they give to names, if your parents have a funny look on their face when you say you made a new friend at school called 'whatever' then they are going to pick up on it.

Children don't really know what names are unusual so unless it sounds like something rude or funny they're unlikely to pick on it. Basically if there's a child called

oops
...called Gifford or Rain or Creed at their school then that name becomes normal to them. It's adults that usually cause problems, I reckon.
