Boys name - Jos or Joss - short for ...... Joscelyn?

DH and I are really struggling for a name for Ds2

We had liked Rupert but flappy mouthed DH told everyone the name and we've basically been out off by everyone's reactions so much so that can't now think of using it.

We've just met a Joss (christened Joseph) and amazing we both like Jos/Joss as a name, but I'm not sure on Joseph as the full name

Can I call him Joscelyn/Joslyn? Any other names Jos can be short for?

Josiah?

Joshua?

I think Joscelyn is a girl's name. Could you not just call him Joss if that is the name you like? FWIW I like Joseph and it's a strong classic name..

I had a male boss called Jocelyn. Lovely name, and he was always Jos. He was (prob still is but we don't work together any more) a great bloke as well.

Thanks princess - had not thought of Josiah, will see what DH thinks of that when he surfaces (I have a kicking belly keeping me awake)
I think Joshua should just shorten to Josh though.

Gin - I do really like Jocelyn as a boys name, bearing in mind that we would stick to Jos/Joss as his actual name. I can think of Jos Ackland and have googled a couple more male Jocelyn's

Hmmm Jos or Rupert???

I only know male Jocelyns, it can be a girl's name but it is predominantly male and was a male name first. Joss is lovely, with Joseph you risk Joe.

shoobidoo · 06/10/2013 07:47

Rupert is a great name!

I only know a female Joss, short for Jocelyn. I'm not keen on Jo/Joe nor on Joseph, sounds so biblical.

Joscelyn is a lovely name, but, because nowadays people often think of it as a girl's name, you may want to be careful how you use it. If you're bothered by people's reaction (and it sounds like you are) then think carefully about it.

For example, you may choose t name ds Joscelyn and only ever use Joss, but school may use his full name in any case.

I think that you would be wise to use his full name regularly so that he would be comfortable with it. Otherwise he may end up disliking his full name (as people often dislike their unused middle name, and as my nickname-usinbg ds dislikes his tull name) and you give bullies ammunition when they discover that he has a name that he is uncomfortable with (as happened to me).

If you like Joss, why not simply name him Joss?

FamiliesShareGerms · 06/10/2013 07:55

Jolyon?

ILoveAFullFridge · 06/10/2013 07:56

If you like an unusual name, what about Jolyon (my favourite character from The Forsyte Saga)? That could also be shortened to Joss.

ILoveAFullFridge · 06/10/2013 07:57

Snap!Grin

Peyto · 06/10/2013 08:02

I know a boy called Josquin. Always gets called Jos.

YonilyDevotedToYou · 06/10/2013 08:07

I knew a Jonathan shortened to Joss.

MelanieCheeks · 06/10/2013 08:10

Joss Ackland, the actor, is Jocelyn.

TapTapBangBang · 06/10/2013 08:11

Jocelyn doesn't have an s in it. Don't spell it Joscelyn that looks wrong. It is a male name, but a very feminine sounding one. I don't like it. What about Josiah?

ICameOnTheJitney · 06/10/2013 08:13

I LOVE Joss....adore it. Just call him Joss...why does it need to be "short for" anything?

StuckForboynamehelp · 06/10/2013 08:46

Thanks all - hadn't thought of Jolyon [flower] which could be a better substitute than Jocelyn/Joscelyn (there are lots of ways to spell it out there)

I think we'll start with Jos and see how we go with that for the first few days - thank god you don't need to register names immediately Grin

Now for middle names .....

Oops Thanks not flower - Jolyon is more a recognisable "boys" name.

Why not just joss?

If you give him another name he may end up with a different nickname.

Clawdy · 07/10/2013 09:08

Josiah is a lovely and unusual name.
