In the Welsh Language, our vowels are different so y is actually a vowel- as is w and sometimes h!

Alis Bran actually means crow haha so maybe not as strong a name as raven would be!

Also, be wary of pronounciation- someone upthread said Llyr was pronounced Lleer, but it doesn't sound like that- might be the closest replication in English but it's still not correct. Neither is Howl for Hywel, in wales Hywel sounds nothing like Howl at all!

A few suggestions:

Celt
Wyn
Glyn
Twm
Rhys
Jac
Llew

feetlikeahobbit Celyn is Welsh for Holly so more traditionally a girls name.

It sometimes does sound like Howl. Depending on who you know with that name and how they pronounce it.

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/09/2013 14:02

Howell might sound like Howl, but if it spelt Hywel I would expect it to be pronounced Huh-well.

Both have two syllables and two vowels anyway.

rosyryan · 30/09/2013 15:09

Damn, I came on to say Bran and Llyr but was beaten to it!

shrinkingnora · 30/09/2013 17:28

But pronounced Howl it has one syllable and the op has already said she doesn't count y as a vowel. I didn't make the rules Wink

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/09/2013 18:16

Raven/crow - same difference. Both a black bird! Grin

Hywel does sound different to Howell but how different depends on where in Wales you are. Accents innit.
