  1. Al-dous (as in first syllable of Albert)
  1. Awl-dous (as in the word all)

No idea, which is possibly an indicator that this will be an issue for lots of people throughout the childs life.

How about Dave?

benfoldsfive · 28/09/2013 12:33

Al-dus

HavantGuard · 28/09/2013 14:16
  1. Oll (as in doll without the d) - duss (as in dust without the t)
Sparrowfarts · 28/09/2013 14:17

No. 2, certainly Huxley is Awldous.

niffernaffer · 28/09/2013 14:19

Oll-duss

overthemill · 28/09/2013 14:19

All-duss.

snice · 28/09/2013 14:26

The only one I have known pronounced his name all-duss

snice · 28/09/2013 14:27

He was dead posh as well

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/09/2013 14:43

First one.

I knew someone who had it as a surname

meditrina · 28/09/2013 14:49

Oll-duss

sleepingbeautiful · 28/09/2013 15:48

I'd assume the first way, as will most other of my fellow ignorant peasants, therefore blessing your DS with a lifetime of correcting people.

More like Oll-duss (sort of...you know that actor Alan ALder, or ALder Hey hospital? I think it should be pronounced like that with Duss on the end)...Am I making any sense? Not Al as in Albert, or Al as in All...forme, anyway.

benfoldsfive · 28/09/2013 16:42

pronunciation makes me laugh. How much hassel will that cause? And for how long? Until he can introduce himself? Teachers and other children pick upon names very quickly.

If all my dc have to complian about in life is the pronunciation of there name id celebrate.

My dd is named lily she is constantly asked how does she spell that!

benfoldsfive · 28/09/2013 16:45

That wasn't aimed at you op but at those saying you are given you dc a burden by given him a name that's isn't able to be phonetically spelled!

squoosh · 28/09/2013 16:47

I have a surname that is phonetically spelt and yet EVERY day of my life I have to spell it out for people.

pygmy · 28/09/2013 17:11

Thanks all. It's actually for his middle name, so not a major issue. I always presumed it was pronounced Awl-dous, but a friend threw me last night when she said it was Al-dous (she's a lot brighter than me Smile ).

All dus- the dus like the dus in dust.

HouseAtreides · 28/09/2013 17:21

My friend's surname is Aldous and he pronounces it Old- uss.

mathanxiety · 28/09/2013 18:12

Me too Squoosh. There is even a reasonably well-known actor with the same surname and still the different pronunciations are incredible. It's a clunky Anglo Saxon surname. My first name is Irish

The lesson is, don't bother anticipating how others will mangle your name. Use whatever name you like, because no matter what the origin or spelling or pronunciation there are people who are not very bright will get it wrong.

All-duss, emphasis on the first syllable, is how I have always heard it pronounced.

bishboschone · 28/09/2013 18:25

2 as in Huxley ... In fact I prefer the name Huxley !

MrsMongoose · 29/09/2013 00:46

Awl dous.

I think it's one of those things that changes with accent rather than pronunciation Iyswim?

Fab name btw. Has been one of my faves for a very long time.
