Malcolm....

Yes I know, how could you look at a baby and call him Malcolm... BUT it's growing on me:

  • name of my amazing grandad
  • name of Malcolm Middleton who I like (from the band Arab Strap)
  • I'm part Scottish so I think it would be a nod to that...

Or is it too old fashioned? Other front runner is Joseph, which is nice but a bit dul...

Well you could start a revival trend I suppose, but is it worth the risk?!

tywysogesgymraeg · 24/09/2013 15:45

No!

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 24/09/2013 15:50

Brodicea · 24/09/2013 15:55

SpottedDickandCustard · 24/09/2013 16:01

Please don't.......................

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2013 16:03

Yes, it's a perfectly normal Scottish name and the name of a great friend of mine.

Madamecastafiore · 24/09/2013 16:04

Malc the talc.

Sorry there was a boy around when I was a teenager called Malcolm and I could never think of anything else other than Malc the talc.

God awful name.

Snoot · 24/09/2013 16:08

I love it! It actually is unusual, straightforward, unpretentious and a proper name, the holy grail! Go for it, I think it's über cute for a little boy.

squoosh · 24/09/2013 16:47

There are loads of them in Scotland, I know a few 'cool' Malcolms around the 30 year age mark.

It's still a dreadful, dreadful name though.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 24/09/2013 16:50

I like it actually. Nn Col or Mal.

It amazing how random the divide is between 'accepted' retro name and naff.

squoosh · 24/09/2013 16:54

Accepted retro name are ones belonging to the dead basically. Malcolm belongs in a box with Roger, Colin and Bernard for me. Not your turn yet boys!

Bowlersarm · 24/09/2013 16:55

Don't like it.

To me, it is in the same vein as Geoffrey, Keith, Clive, Derek, Barry.

Just bleughhh ......!

weebarra · 24/09/2013 16:55

It's my DF's name and DS2's middle name. I'm Scottish though so maybe more common here. NN can also be Malkie which is Glasgow patter for a heid butt.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 24/09/2013 16:59

Yeah, but why do we have this weird dividing line where names of our grandparents generation are cool, but the names of our parents aren't? Plus, certain names like Ethel get a majorly hard time despite being of the right era.

Isn't going with an Edmund or whatever a bit like the way in the 90s half the country had strapless poofy wedding dresses, words on their wall and pebbly/twiggy shit in their downstairs loo. It's just conforming without considering your own taste.

Minion · 24/09/2013 17:00

I'd say if you were giving birth to a fully grown 56 year old man, go for it.
Since that's highly unlikely, no. (ps I can say this as my dad is a 56 year old man named Malcolm, but he doesn't work at McDs)

squoosh · 24/09/2013 17:02

Because the further things are away from us, chronologically speaking, the fresher and cooler they sound.

Wait till your child wants to call their child Karen or Barry, you will recoil in horror and be baffled by their 'wow Barry is such a fresh name, definitely due a comeback'.

Arudonto · 24/09/2013 17:32

I like it its a good solid scottish name....I love Malachi and Marcus as well though so might just be a fan of longer M names .

BalloonSlayer · 24/09/2013 17:35

Malcolm Tucker! Grin

(Someone told me that Callum is the same name as Malcolm, is that right?)

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 24/09/2013 17:53

squoosh - I do get that the reason is because it's further away chronologically. It just makes no sense to me Grin

Brodicea · 24/09/2013 17:55

I don't feel like it's in the same league as Barry/Keith/Derek (which I tend to lump together - lord knows why!), but this article disagrees as it was less popular than Derek in 2012 www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19247787

BUT Malcolm Tucker is a plus point for sure!

squoosh · 24/09/2013 17:58

Oh I agree, there's absolutely no sense involved, in ten years I may well think 'oh wow, I really wish I'd called my son Bernard, Bernard is the coolest name ever'. I suppose there must be so many subtle social influences at play that we're too dense to realise that we're blindly following.

pokesandprodsforthelasttime · 24/09/2013 18:10

It reminds me of Malcolm in the middle. It weirdly seems to suit that little boy, so why not?

Inglori0us · 24/09/2013 18:37

I like it. My husband is half Scottish and he likes it too and has now short listed it for our unborn child! I love Mal as a nickname. Malachy is one of my favourites.
