Need your opinions and ideas for old fashioned boys name

Hi

I'm having a little boy due in December and I'm looking for ideas for boys names, but have quite a long list already.

DH has slightly more wacky taste than me, you'll probably be able to pick out his suggestions from the list below Grin

My favourite name is Edward but DH thinks it's boring Hmm

We're struggling to find a compromise. Please could you give me your opinions on the following names, and any other suggestions we might like. We like old-fashioned names and need to avoid names with "Th" in as our surname starts with this.

Edward - Ted but don't mind Ed either
Sebastian
Archibald - Archie
Gabriel
Frederick - Fred
Albert
Felix
Barnaby - Barney
Emmanuel
Raphael
Rufus
Jeremiah
Ezra
Angus
Hamish
Edwin
Abraham
Edgar
Magnus
Elwood
Gilbert
Linus
Cosmo
Jarvis
Douglas
Bertram
Clarence

Tbh with the definite exception of Clarence, Jarvis and Elwood I like most of these names. Jeremiah and Ezra are rarer than Sam and Noah as far as Biblical names go.

Edgar like Edward will get shortened to Ed or Eddie.

If you're neither Scottish nor live north of Hadrian's Wall the names Angus Douglas and Hamish will be novel, would you also consider Ross or Callum?

If you want some others to consider
Arthur
Guy
Julian
Miles
Stanley

I just read these out to a friend and she said OMG it's an Enid Blyton revival!

Littlecherublegs · 24/09/2013 12:34

I like Sebastian, Rufus, Bertram, Linus and Gabriel.

Good list! Smile

sonlypuppyfat · 24/09/2013 12:37

Gabriel is lovely, I think the Archie Bertie thing has been done to death

AurorasShoes · 24/09/2013 12:38

I love:
Gabriel
Felix
Raphael
Rufus

BackforGood · 24/09/2013 12:43

Sorry - I only like Edward out of all of them - possibly Angus if you are Scottish.
When you said 'old-fashioned' I was thinking more of solid, traditional....
Peter, John, Matthew, David, Richard,Stephen, Mark type names Smile

rachel234 · 24/09/2013 15:12

I like Linus, Magnus, Raphael and Rufus. How about Quentin, Fabian or Marcus?

I agree with your dh that Edward is boring - there are so many little (and older) Eds and Edwards around already.

Also agree that the cutesy names that were so trendy recently are falling out of fashion - Archie, Artie, Albie etc.

KitNCaboodle · 24/09/2013 15:24

We have an Edward and a Bertie.
From your list I also like Hamish and Gabriel

VerySmallSqueak · 24/09/2013 15:37

I love Jeremiah (Jem) and Ezrah.

Edward is lovely and a good solid name, but I prefer the more unconventional.

VerySmallSqueak · 24/09/2013 15:38

How about Sidney?

I love Sidney.

MiniDays · 24/09/2013 16:25

Thanks for your opinions. I agree Edward is popular but that's because it's a great name! DH not budging on it though :(

Donkeys I love Arthur too but can't use it because our surname starts with "Th" and too many "th" sounds is a bit of a mouthful.

verysmallsqueak I bet DH would love Sidney!

George? Bit boring in some people's opinion but was my favourite for a while (still is really but not sure about the popularity of it). Benjamin or Thomas?

BNmum · 24/09/2013 17:49

I like the majority of with the exception of: Emmanuel, Jeremiah, Ezra and Elwood. Have you considered:
Solomon - Sol/Solly
Bartholomew - Tolly/Tully
Edwin
Ambrose

pokesandprodsforthelasttime · 24/09/2013 18:08

I'm right, DH loves Sidney so that might go on the list :)

sadpander I like George too but every 2nd boy around here is George, Ben, Tom, Harry or Sam.

I really like Bartholomew - but worry about the Bart Simpson association. Do you think this would be a problem?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 24/09/2013 18:12

Keir
Saul
Victor

minidipper · 24/09/2013 18:15

Benedict (but he would end up being Ben)
Theodore - Theo/Ted
Izaak/Isaac
Elias
Maximillian (Max)
Alfred (Fred/Al, Alf - doesn't have to be Alfie if you feel those names are over)
Wilfred
Jeremiah (Jem, Jerry, Jed)
Jeffrey

I love Edward too btw - not that I'm biased....

headlesslambrini · 24/09/2013 18:16

Alfred
Victor
Eric
Charles
Edmund
Stanley

littlealien01 · 24/09/2013 19:01

clement
neville

VerySmallSqueak · 24/09/2013 21:07

Your dh has excellent taste pokes

BNmum · 25/09/2013 08:06

There's always the possibility of the Bart Simpson connection op. To be honest it wouldn't worry me and within our family we associate Tolly/Tully as the natural nn for Bartholomew so it would be shortened to this rather than Bart.

Playboxpony · 25/09/2013 08:43

Oooh like your list alot - some of my favourites on there! I am also pregnant and for a boy we are considering:
Magnus
William
Hamish
Murray

Other names you might like (Scottish ones) - Torin, Ramsay, Innes, Rory, Ruaridh, Alistair, Fraser, Fergus

Or more biblical/traditional:
Reuben, Jakob (Jacob), Seth, Kristoffer (Christopher)

Best of luck!

Playboxpony · 25/09/2013 08:45

Forgot to add James - very classic and lovely, but not heard so much nowadays

curlew · 25/09/2013 08:48

How about Edmund instead of Edward?

Patrick?

PestoSwimissimos · 25/09/2013 08:48

Lawrence
Edmund
Gerald
