As only like girl names, and oops, it's apparently a boy!

Must be pronounced the same in Hebrew and English, for example, sister's name is Ella.

No Adam or Ben or really old fashioned biblical names like Ezra. What do you think about Ori? Easy to say in English?

Thankfully we have time to decide and think about it!

Asher Barak David (obv!) Jonathan Judah Joshua

vitaminC · 23/09/2013 14:53

Not sure about Ori, but I like Oren.
What about Ariel? Avigdor? Nathaniel?

Are you looking for names that would work in Israel, as trends and fashions there would obviouly have to be taken into account, if you want to avoid giving a name that would sound too dated...

absentmindeddooooodles · 23/09/2013 14:59

Lilliput · 23/09/2013 15:00

I love Avital cos I love avi as a nn

Stevie77 · 23/09/2013 15:17

VitaminC Yes, definitely want a name that would also work in Israel. But OH is British and we live in the UK so it has to work both ways as much as possible.

Thanks everyone else, but whilst some of these names are lovely, they are definitely in the old fashioned, biblical category. Am not Orthodox and have no intention giving a name mostly used by Jewish Orthodox, no offence.

We had the same challenge.

I have a ds with a similar name to 'Ori' and it isn't the easiest to live with here...it's fine as he can spell it quickly, but everyone assumes he's just dropping a consonant when he first introduces himself.

How about:

Liran
Matan
Miel
Elai
Nadav
Nitzan

singarainbow · 23/09/2013 15:40

Saul?

viola28 · 23/09/2013 16:26

How about Ezekiel (nickname Zeke)?

Samuel is also very nice, Malachi and Moses are also popular in the US

Clargo55 · 23/09/2013 18:10

Elias
Tobias

I'm gonna give you my favourite name ever, and if I ever have another son this will be his name. Effron it means singing bird and I love it. I didn't like it at first (know someone called it) but the longer I have known the name the more and more I love it.

Stevie77 · 23/09/2013 19:24

Thanks Fillybuster, of your list I don't mind Elai. If your son's name is what I think it is, it is one of my favourites but alas my cousin's name.

I quite like how Effron rolls off the tongue Dragons but it reminds me too much of a name of a settlement and not in a good way :-/

I said I was fussy!

Ilan. ilan.

Mutteroo · 24/09/2013 01:07

Love the name Ori. Who cares if some people spell to wrong? I've spent my whole life spelling out my name & once I've done so once, its never normally forgotten.

EstelleGetty · 24/09/2013 08:59

I like Ariel, nn Ari and Avram nn Avi.

vitaminC · 24/09/2013 11:33

How about Noam? That's fairly ubiquitous in terms of style/feel, although extremely popular in Israel right now, I think...

Tal? Maybe even Tom? Guy?

Some other slightly more "out there" suggestions:
Saar
Sela
Stav
Paz
Eitan
Amit
Aden
Adi
Asaf
Agam
Shai
Ziv

PuzzledBear · 24/09/2013 11:46

Liam. In English it means 'protection', in Hebrew it means 'my people'.

sonlypuppyfat · 24/09/2013 11:48

I love Ira please will someone use it!

Corvuscorax · 24/09/2013 11:50

Avner?

ZZZenagain · 24/09/2013 12:08

Lior
Ron (of course this one is especially easy for English speakers!)
Tal

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/09/2013 12:10

I really like Ori, and it's not that difficult to learn to pronounce once you've been told once. Also really like. Akiva, Herschel, Asa, Gal and Gavi.

Guy, Adley, Tobias/Tobi/Tovi, Phineas, Jude, Deron lack obvious Hebrew/Biblical connotation and have a modern, up-beat ring to them.
