39 Weeks and cannot even agree on a shortlist! Anyone been there?

DH and I really do not agree on names! This is our 1st baby and I never thought it would be this hard. Occasionally we agree on a name for a day before one of us changes our mind. I don't want to settle on a name until dc is here but I'd like to have some ideas at least! We also don't know the sex so are having to think of twice as many names.
How did you overcome this??

Hiya, Me and my partner couldnt agree on names, then one day at 38 weeks he said a name and we stuck to it. Dont worry to much as sometimes when you give me they 'dont look like' the name you have chosen if this makes sense. Alot of people do change names later on in the pregnancy. Hope you agree on one in the end =]

Yes we were like this last time and at 33 weeks with dc2 we aren't doing much better.

Are the names you both like very different?

We agreed on a girls name early on but could not agree on a boys name. I think we went through every name possible, even discussing it whilst i was giving birth. In the end as i was in labour he agreed that i could decide the boys name. Luckily we had a DD and we both love her name. Not much help too you i know but your DP may let you chose when he sees what you go through.

You'll get there eventually :)

With DS, we chose a name when he was 1 day old, and in retrospect it's obvious all along that that was going to be his name as it's the only one I didn't have major objections to! (I read 8 baby names books ahd rejected the name in all of them!)

With DD, it took us till she was nearly 2 weeks old to agree. It could have gone several ways tbh but I'm really pleased wit the name we did choose.

How are you trying to decide btw?

In case it's of any use, here's the baby name book we finally found DS's name in Penguin Dictionary of First Names

We were exactly the same! Had a list of 26 names, of which I liked some and DH liked others. We ended up not naming DD until two days after she was born. We brought her home, had a good long look at her and tried some of them out. Ended up with one of DH's favourites as a first with my choice as middle - they just suited her when we said them out loud, and worked perfectly together. Love her name now!

Thanks everyone, I think we really might have to call him or her 'baby' for several days until we can decide! We live in Wales and I'd like a name that's Welsh in origin, though not Welsh language for versatility later in life. I don't them to have to spell it to everyone they meet! DH likes very English names, Felicity was one we really disagree on. I love Megan, he says it will get shortened to Meg which he hates.
We've tried looking at lots of name sites and apps, books overwhelm me a bit with the choice! Name berry has been really good for inspiration as it gives fairly short lists to consider. I've also found the top names for 2012 after looking on here
We also have an unusual surname that starts with V! ALSO, DH thinks the 1st and middle names should sound good when used together for tellings off! Lol!

We didn't really have a shortlist either, just a few names that we both 'sort of' liked. When DD was born I suggested a name that we'd briefly discussed a few weeks previously but hasn't added to 'the list'. It just popped into my head again when I saw her and I thought it suited her. Luckily DH agreed!

Dylan I really wanted but I suspect it is overused in Wales due to mr. Thomas?

Kittykatmacbill · 18/09/2013 21:26

We had decided on our boys name at about 14 weeks, only picked our girls one in after 36 hours of labour, between signing the c-section consent and being wheeled out to the operating theatre.

Luckily she suits her name...
