Isadora for sure

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/09/2013 19:34

Isadora. I heard someone calling their little girl at the weekend and thought it was gorgeous.

squoosh · 17/09/2013 19:35

Hmmmm, they're both very dramatic but I think I'd go for Isadora, good nickname potential and to be honest the first thing I think of when I hear Jocasta is jockstrap.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2013 19:38

Isadora by a mile.

McMW · 17/09/2013 19:39

Oh gawd, I hadn't thought of jockstrap....

Isadora Elizabeth is our thought, but I think it as too much zzzzzz sound.

I love Jocasta, it is one of my favourite names. Isadora not so much.

RoadToTuapeka · 17/09/2013 23:59

I don't like Jocasta, leaving aside jockstrap, she may well end up being called Jock for short (even if affectionately by friends), how would that sit with you? Maybe you could try to encourage Cas/Cassie but once she's at school it's not in your power what friends call her.

So Isadora might be nicer?

NadiaWadia · 18/09/2013 00:36

I prefer Isadora - pretty name and she good choice of nicknames as you say.

I though Jocasta was pronounced Joe - casta (with a long, not short 'O') so don't see why it sounds like jockstrap at all?

Agree that maybe Isadora Elizabeth has too many 'z's. If you like the 'el' sound why not Isadora Ellen or Isadora Eleanor?

NadiaWadia · 18/09/2013 00:36

'she would have' a good choice

charleslingus · 18/09/2013 11:02

In my experience from school, Jocasta is kinda pronounced:

Jah-casta, or even j'casta if you're terribly smart.

I've never heard it pronounced with the Joe sound. I suppose it entirely depends on accents. This was in London.

Both are lovely but isadora has nicer nicknames, love Dora.

YoniMontana · 18/09/2013 11:05

Jocasta was Oedipus's mother so no!!!

Isadora for sure!

Leopoldina · 18/09/2013 11:05

what about Jacquetta instead of jocasta jockstrap?

YoniMontana · 18/09/2013 11:06

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jocasta

gazzalw · 18/09/2013 11:10

And think about what happened to Isadora Duncan...

tywysogesgymraeg · 18/09/2013 11:12

Both tres posh, suitable for marrying an earl or a baronet me thinks. But both lovely. I couldn't decide.

YoniMontana · 18/09/2013 11:13

gazzalw :o

charleslingus · 18/09/2013 11:14

What did happen to isadora Duncan?

[Blush] at asking as an ex dance student.

charleslingus · 18/09/2013 11:15
Blush
Ponders · 18/09/2013 11:16

strangled by a car Shock

Ponders · 18/09/2013 11:17

(well she was in a TV version of her life years ago. looong scarf, wheels with spokes, scarf billowed & got caught in wheel...)

charleslingus · 18/09/2013 11:20

Shit the bed, just googled it. Lesson learned about the dangers of scarfs in cars.

Maybe teach your daughter to stay away from dramatic accessories should you chose it!

NomDeClavier · 18/09/2013 11:21

I like both but have reservations about both IYSWIM. Marginally prefer Isadora but neither would really raise eyebrows.

Dislike Isadora Elizabeth though.

gazzalw · 18/09/2013 11:35

I just think, like Ophelia, they are names with negative vibes....

YoniMontana · 18/09/2013 11:35

I didn't realise something did happen to ID! I thought gazzalw was being sarky.
Oh dear :(

charleslingus · 18/09/2013 11:54

I like Ophelia.

If you love the name go for it. Most people won't look at your child and associate anything negative, they will associate it with your beautiful child.

I have a negative vibes mythological name, but generally get a positive reaction, lots of women have said they wished they had my name.

I think when you are looking objectively at a name it is easy to pull up the negatives, but once it is assigned to someone, they own it and it is much easier to appreciate a beautiful name.
