I'm welsh as far as I'm aware the name work either spelling is pronounced Ah-nay-rin. Not Ah-nye-rin.

Two close family members are fluent in Welsh.

Fellow Welsh Mumsnetters - am I wrong/are they wrong?

Welsh speaker here - the correct prn. is as you say, Ah-nay-rin.

Cezella · 16/09/2013 00:08

Yes you are right- A-neigh-rin. Welsh is my first language and this is a bit of a bugbear of mine as people say A-nye-rin a lot! Don't know where Nye comes from as a nickname really because there is no Nye sound in the name when you say it correctly!

NadiaWadia · 16/09/2013 05:35

So why was Aneurin (sp?) Bevan known as Nye then? He was Welsh, wasn't he?

mejon · 16/09/2013 07:54

Nadia because Aneurin Bevan came from a more anglicised area of Wales and pronounced his name with the 'nye' sound. There are lots of names with an 'ay/ey' sound that are mispronounced 'eye' - Eiry, Eirlys, Eirwen etc.

I'm from a more anglicised area of Wales but I can't get my tongue around saying Eirlys etc with the eye sound at all!

Not even in a "that doesn't sound right" way, just can't say it and it resemble the name!

I know an Ah-nye-rin. He's called Nye 90% of the time and they don't live in an anglicised part of Wales.

It's An-ey-rin. Unfortunately, some non-Welsh speakers give their children Welsh names and don't check the pronounciation, even if they live in predominantly Welsh-speaking areas. That's the only way I can explain Chocolatehunter's friend. I have come across this a lot with a variety of names, some even ignoring the 'll' 'ch' and 'dd' sounds in their own children's names.

I know an Aneurin that's known as Ney.
