Older brother is called Jakob (koby for his nickname). Do these names match? Our surname is a single syllable. If not, can anyone suggest a suitable formal name with a cute nickname :)

How do you pronounce the 'ch'? As 'k' or as in 'loch'?

I like the name, but if its the soft ch sound people are always going to mispronounce it.

I like Loki (Norse god of mischief?) but not Lachey, unless its the soft ch. otherwise it would sound too much like lackey.

If you don't mind another J, how about

Jolyon (lovely character from the Forsyte Saga), Joly
or
Jonathan, Jonty

There are loads of lovely formal names with cute nicknames (this could be fun!)

Isaac, Zacky
Zachary, Zacky
Toseland, Tolly (from the Green Knowe series)
Laurence, Laurie

ILoveAFullFridge · 31/08/2013 08:20

Meredith, Merry

EroticTebbit · 31/08/2013 08:21

Lochia (sorry)

Inforthefun · 31/08/2013 08:24

It will be pronounced Loklin or Loki. Really struggling with names this time but I'm loving the zachy suggestion :). I also really like Seth but that won't go with our single syllable surname.

It's not a great name for a person, really, is it? Unless you want people to think about all the negative connotations associated with Loki the Norse god. He really doesn't come across very well in Norse mythology.

Low key for me (ever since reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods.)

Inforthefun · 31/08/2013 08:26

Hmm, never thought of the lochia connection. Precisely why I posted so we can avoid horrible nicknames or associations. God this is such a difficult task. Had this baby been a girl we had names already selected -they were easy!

I like lochy pn lock-ee so cute, there's a little boy lochy in a playgroup I go to.

Offcolour · 31/08/2013 08:28

Sorry but you don't pronounce Lachlan "locklin". It has a soft ch sound as in "loch", it's a Scottish name. Calling him Lachlan but pronouncing it "Locklin" sounds ridiculous to anyone Scottish. Please don't do it.

dyslexicdespot · 31/08/2013 08:31

I an a Swede and would never name a child Loki, having grownup knowing Norse mythology. S/he is not really the type of person you name a child after!

fanjodisfunction · 31/08/2013 09:55

I love the name, but would never use the nn Loki, it just doesn't fit to me.

SmallBee · 31/08/2013 10:09

Hmmm I'd do some research on the god Loki before you decide on naming him that, he really was a horrible character, I think God of Mischief is a bit misleading unless your idea of mischief involves things like land mines.
Love the full name though, Seth is gorgeous too.

Frontdoorstep · 31/08/2013 10:10

I agree with off-colour. Lachlan is pronounced as in loch-lan. Lachy is the same Lach-y. Scottish people will find anything else very odd, however if you are not in Scotland you might be ok.

buzzgirly · 31/08/2013 10:15

Lachlan is pronounced with a soft ch as in loch, it was my dads name so know it well - he was known as Lachie.

Locklin sounds odd.

itsnothingoriginal · 31/08/2013 13:37

I love it and was on my list for DS1 but we didn't go for it because of pronunciation problems. We went for Laurie instead - similar but easier to say!

SavoyCabbage · 31/08/2013 14:21

There are loads of Lachlans in Australia. Loads. It's very popular. Lachie is the most popular short spelling.

MairyHoles · 31/08/2013 14:37

Lachlan can be pronounced lach - or loch - lan, I have heard of both with the same spelling. But never lacklan. I think Vince Vaughan's daughter is called locklyn and, being Scottish, it doesn't sound right to me! It is ddifficult to abbreviate it but if you don't like the name I would say just don't call him it! I think Lachlan is lovely but none of the potential abbreviations are and the amount of mispronunciation you will encounter will mean you eventually stop correcting people by the time he's 9 months old, I can personally guarantee you....

aoife24 · 31/08/2013 15:22

Really like it, with the sort rather than the long 'a' which seems to me to be more the Australian pronunciation, ie Lochlan.

whyno · 31/08/2013 18:10

I've always loved Lachlan / lachie (pronounced lochie with soft ch). Doesn't matter if some ppl mispronounce Smile

mathanxiety · 31/08/2013 21:36

I don't think Irish or Scottish names lend themselves to shortening the way more anglicised names do.

EllaRees · 31/08/2013 21:43

I have a friend called Lachlan (pronounced Laklan) and it gets shortened to Lax. He does get frequent mispronunciation of Lochlan, or is addressed as Mr Lachlan as people think it's his surname. It is a great name though I think.

Strokethefurrywall · 01/09/2013 01:37

It's #1 on my name list for DC2 depending on what we end up with in 6 months!

Classic, love it. NN would probably be Lachie I would think.

Rachael200694 · 01/09/2013 01:51

I had a teacher at college called Lachlan McLachlan, thought I would just add that in there Grin

Writerwannabe83 · 01/09/2013 12:26

That reminded me of that book about all the dogs from Donaldson's Dairy Grin

Rosie3351 · 18/09/2013 23:08

We have a Lochlan. Spelt it that way as it is easier to pronounce and so far nobody has misspelt it and it does sound great when a said in a Scottish accent. We call him Lochs or Lochers for short
