Iris or Ida?

Love Iris but concerned it could become very popular, or we have Ida as an alternative as it was my Grandma's name. Or are they too similar to Eva, Ava, Isla which are beautiful but very popular at the moment.

Ida is fabulous and much less popular than Iris. Not at all similar to those others, and I think a family connection is a wonderful thing to have with a name.

Iris. Definitely.

Iris is feminine and elegant.

Ida wears a pinnie, cooks fried breakfasts at a transport caff and always has a fag dangling from her mouth.

Sqoosh, Ida was OP's grandma's name!!!

I love both, but would go with Iris too, purely because I can really see it working well on a little girl and a grown up.

xx

Ooooops sorry, I didn't read the part about it being your Granny's name. I'll just sidle out the thread . . . . . . .

Prefer Iris, and don't think it will be over popular.

telsa · 26/08/2013 12:49

I know an Ida who is aristocratic,...so not sure about that image!

MrsJohnDeere · 26/08/2013 13:02

Iris

YoungBritishPissArtist · 26/08/2013 13:11

If you're worried about popularity, I'd go with Ida.

I like them both though, lovely, classy names Smile

WinnieF · 26/08/2013 15:53

Ida is lovely

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 26/08/2013 17:39

Ida currently wears a pinny, but then Elsie, Iris, Ruby and Pearl used to, so I think that a baby's name can come to suit a new generation

I do like Iris, but I think in certain quarters it is taking off.

Viviennemary · 26/08/2013 17:42

I much much prefer Iris. Not keen on Ida. It is very very old ladyish. I only knew one when I was a child and she was about 70 then. I think it's short for something but can't think what. But I don like some of the 'old fashioned' names like Pearl, Veronica Pamela and so on.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/08/2013 18:59

Iris is nice.

Think Ada is nicer than Ida.

Neverdonethisbefore · 26/08/2013 20:10

Thanks for your input everyone, I do like the 'nursing home generation' names as there aren't a million of them around.

Love Ida. I hadn't heard of it before but it's lovely and names with a family connection are always special.

scarlettsmummy2 · 26/08/2013 20:39

I like iris, but there are two in my daughters nursery class.

BlueStarsAtNight · 27/08/2013 22:49

What's your surname like? If they both go then I think Iris would edge it, but I do really like Ida. I also love Ada!

yawningbear · 27/08/2013 23:00

Iris, it is the name of my never to be born DD2, in fact it is one of the reasons why DS was conceived, I was convinced he would be DD2 and we would call him Iris Blush

I think it is a beautiful name and not too popular around here. Ida is also very lovely though.

sleepingbeautiful · 28/08/2013 00:41

IMO...
Iris is elegant, Ida is not. Ada is marginally better than Ida. Aida is better than Ida or Ada.

PilgrimSoul · 28/08/2013 01:04

How do you pronounce Ida? Only ever seen it written.
Ee-da or eye-da?

telsa · 28/08/2013 09:08

eye-da in the UK and eeee-da in Germanic lands.
