Is Elsa a complete name?

Pretty set on using Elsa if DC2 (due in 2 days) is a girl. Just can't decide whether it's a full name in it's own right, or whether it's a short version of Elizabeth. What do you think?

I think of it as a full name. It wouldn't even occur to me that it was a nn for Elizabeth if I was introduced to an Elsa.

BikeRunSki · 18/08/2013 08:50

It is a full name, and a lovely one at that. Was on list for DD.

NickyNackyNooNoo · 18/08/2013 09:04

Yes, I know quite a few ranging from 40 to 4 - I think it's a lovely name unusual but not 'out there' Smile

ProtectiveMother · 18/08/2013 09:06

It's a perfect name. I think it's Scandinavian and hasn't got anything to do with Elizabeth there. I quite liked it too.

Vatta · 18/08/2013 09:17

Full name definitely. It wouldn't occur to me it was a shortening of anything tbh.

ConcreteElephant · 18/08/2013 11:06

I agree it's a full name. I really like it and have an Aunt named Ailsa, which is a variant spelling. I think it is distantly related to Elizabeth it doesn't make me think of Elizabeth at all. Lovely choice.

Dimitiesofblue · 18/08/2013 11:22

Yes, I think so.

BigBongTheory · 18/08/2013 11:36

Yes.

LifeIsNow · 18/08/2013 11:36

No 1 on our list for a girl...love it! Using it as a name in it's own right. Love love love it!!

LifeIsNow · 18/08/2013 11:37

Forgot to say it is a name as it stands in Scandinavia....

Sunnysummer · 18/08/2013 11:51

I love it as a full name, always makes me think of the lioness (in a good way) Smile

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/08/2013 13:48

It's one of our family names (German family) and tends to be pronounced as "Elza" rather than with a soft "s" by my central European relations, although the anglicised ones say "Elssa"

I don't particularly love it, but think it is a lot nicer than Elsie.

roweeena · 18/08/2013 14:20

Full name & I like it

Holly94 · 18/08/2013 22:51

Yes definitely a full name. I have a 3 year old cousin named Elsa and I think it's a lovely name. She's named as 'Elizabeth' on her birth certificate but from day 1 has been known as Elsa.

TwoTearsInABucket · 18/08/2013 22:54

Yes, my Grandmaman's name - Swiss-German and pronounced Elza. I'd forgotten that, thanks for reminding me mrsSchadenfreude.

Schmoochypoos · 19/08/2013 00:12

I think it is a lovely name, in it's own right.

PrincessYoni · 19/08/2013 22:11

Envy I looooove this name! It doesn't go with our surname unfortunately. Definitely a name in its own right.

eatyourveg · 19/08/2013 22:17

Does Ailsa work better for you in terms of seeing it as a whole name?

picnicbasketcase · 19/08/2013 22:21

Elsorothy
Elsabel
Elsette
Elsarine

Nope, I think it's just a name by itself.

miffybun73 · 19/08/2013 22:31

Yes, I think so. Lovely name.
