HELP

DH and I decided on the name Aria (pronounced are-e-ah) for our DD. Have revealed the name and people have commented that its nice and unusual.

My mother told a neighbour the name and the neighbour said 1. She was pronouncing it wrong (I forget how she said it should be pronounced but NOT how we think it should be pronounced) and 2. I forget how mum said it but basically neighbour said the name is or is associated with diarrea!!!!

No one else has said this to us (and I even had a name thread on here!)

I pur Aria and diarrea in google and there do seem to be results in Italian but we're Irish (and so is the woman concerned!) as far as I'm concerned the woman was rude but she's put a little niggle in my mind.

Any one speak enough Italian and willing to google for me??

'Aria' is Italian for 'Air'? So not diarrhea? She probably pronounced it A-rye-a?

Choccyhobnob · 14/08/2013 14:57

Aria is a piece of music for an opera, it also means air in Italian, absolutely nothing to do with diarrhoea from what I can gather! Think the neighbour is just a fuckwit who thinks that Aria is pronounced A-REE-ah which sounds vaguely like the end of diarrhoea and not AH-ree-ah x

Aria means air in Italian. Diahorrea is 'diarrea'. No link. At all.

is it a medication or something?

Rooners · 14/08/2013 16:50

Ah, yes it is but it's used to treat schizophrenia.

It is probably a brand name in many areas tbh - it's a pushchair as well.

But it could be a lovely name if you don't mind.

IMO the bigger issue is no one will know how to spell or pronounce it and you will spend ages telling everyone and your dd will spend her life spelling and pronouncing it for everyone who needs to know.

Kezztrel · 14/08/2013 16:58

There's only a link if it's pronounced a-REE-a, which isn't the most obvious pronunciation by a long shot. Your mum's neighbour sounds incredibly rude - ignore! It's not a particularly confusing or difficult name at all IMO - some people might say 'air-ia' at first, then they'll learn. Big deal.

Aria is lovely
People are fools

Aria means air. She is a fuckwit.

HelgatheHairy · 14/08/2013 20:32

Thanks all. We considered the having to pronounce/spell it issue but its short to spell and to be honest she's going to be pronouncing and spelling her address anyway!

The lady who said it is a home help for the elderly so maybe she knows it as a drug name or something close as I'm not sure my mum spelt it.

An Italian I used to know had Aria as part of her surname so I would know the correct pronounciation despite being Irish too. What an ignorant woman. However I probably would have pronounced it the same way as the woman if I hadn't known but diarrhoea would have never entered my mind.
