Is Kit a nn of Christopher or can it be stand alone? What do you think of the name Kit for a boy?

I love the name kit. I planned to use it as a stand alone name

Arewethereyetx100 · 13/08/2013 15:15

Love Kit as NN but, personally, would register as Christopher.

I like Kit short for Christopher or possibly Christian.

Unless your surname is long and complicated and could take a short one syllable first name. But even then I wouldn't personally use it as a stand alone name

Figgygal · 13/08/2013 15:26

Fine as a nn and one he can choose to use when older but personally would be worried about projecting self as a professional person in later life if that was my actual name.

IrisWildthyme · 13/08/2013 15:31

It's a lovely name but I would definitely advise using Christopher (or another name that can shorten to Kit) on the birth certificate and using Kit as the NN - remember that your child will go through all sorts of phases as he goes through childhood, puberty and young adulthood and by having a longer name that can be shortenned in a number of ways you are giving him the flexibility to work out his identity for himself.

hellymelly · 13/08/2013 15:42

I love Kit, really love it, but have a pedantic dislike of nns used as the give nname. For that reason I would have Christopher or Christian and use Kit as the name in common use, but that is just my personal "thing". Kit is a gorgeous name for a man or a small boy.

thisisyesterday · 13/08/2013 15:43

of course it can be stand-alone

i think it's a really lovely name.

I am sure plenty of people dislike their name and don't have a longer version to fall back on, I wouldn't even think of that as an issue tbh... we don't all give our children names with many alternatives so they can choose the one they want.

name your baby whatever you like :)

ladybirdees · 14/08/2013 14:23

Kit was going to be dc2's name if she had been a boy. It would have been stand alone. I love it so much, go for it!

Kezztrel · 14/08/2013 15:02

Really like it.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 14/08/2013 20:22

I love it, nearly used it for DS3, would have used it as a name on its own. He just didn't look like a Kit when he arrived Smile.

iklboo · 14/08/2013 20:26

I love it but it wouldn't go with our surname.

Bunbaker · 14/08/2013 20:27

I, too, don't like nicknames as stand alone names. For a start people will assume that it is a nickname, plus it narrows down the choice for the child when he is older.

hawkmcqueen · 14/08/2013 21:26

Okay so I was wondering about the Kit thing myself, I would use it as a short form of Christian. BUT what do you do then at school? Do you use Christian as their official name or do you always use Kit and introduce child as Kit and have Kit used on their name tags etc?

capitola · 14/08/2013 21:29

I love the name Kit, it was on our list for ds2. It would have been his name, not derivative.

kiwik · 15/08/2013 02:56

Kitto is a Cornish name, often abbreviated to Kit.

KateCroydon · 15/08/2013 11:51

Kester?

Biscuitsneeded · 15/08/2013 18:11

I'm not sure you need a birth cert. long name. Why not just Kit? My son is Bill but we were advised to put William on his birth certificate so he had the option. William is a perfectly nice name but my son is not a William. And now with doctors, new clubs etc we always have to explain that he isn't William, he's Bill. I wish I had stuck to my guns and just named him Bill.

BeaLola · 15/08/2013 19:30

Biscuitsneeded who advisd you to put William down if you don't mind me asking ? I agree bill and William both very different and I personally love Bill but not keen on William.

Op- I really like Kit as a name in its own right eg Kit Thompson , Kit Salisbury, Kit Devonshire so unless you have a very short surname or perhaps one stating with K I would go for it.
