Which classical boys name do you consider usable?

I read the Persephone thread with interest... Are there as many classical-type boys names out there that can be used nowadays? I'm coming more from the Hector/ Percy angle, rather than visions of me shouting 'Theseus' or 'Achilles' across the playground - but correct me if I am wrong!

Hector and Edgar (the two shortlisted names for my son ) Smile

PoopMaster · 12/08/2013 10:29

I don't know which category this fits into but I like Tristan

pygmy · 12/08/2013 10:30

Also, Gilbert, Ivor, Bertram, Magnus

MyBootsAreMuddy · 12/08/2013 10:52

Byron, Edgar, Edmund, Elias, Jonathan, Julius, Magnus, Peter, Simon.
I know a little Nelson (known as Sonny) which i think is quite cool but would not personaly use.

Spindelina · 12/08/2013 11:41

Jason

badtime · 12/08/2013 11:55

I think Orion is cool. Maybe Apollo. Castor?

(there are probably more, but Hector and Jason are the only ones which wouldn't get a Hmm here and there, I think)

Spindelina · 12/08/2013 12:36

Aeneas?

HorryIsUpduffed · 12/08/2013 14:14

We know a Ptolemy Hmm known as Tolly. Only useable in the right circles though.

Alexander has stood the test of time. I also like Hector.

IHeartKingThistle · 12/08/2013 18:10

I know a brand-new Zeus Apollo.

captainbarnacle · 12/08/2013 18:16

Alexander. Top 20 name too!

LauraChant · 12/08/2013 18:24

Philip, Marcus

HorryIsUpduffed · 12/08/2013 18:32

Ant(h)ony maybe?

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 12/08/2013 18:37

Off the top of my head, boys I know with classical names (bear in mind this is from a Anglo Greek/Cypriot background)

Hector
Ares
Leonidas
Alexander
Lysander

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2013 19:02

Love Hector, and I think Terence is due a revival. Tristan is gorgeous. Lots of classic, biblical names are still v good but I especially like Simon.

CruCru · 12/08/2013 19:17

Julian
Alexander
Claude

weebarra · 12/08/2013 19:20

Atticus
Alexander
Leander
Hector
Marcus
Julius

Melonbreath · 14/08/2013 09:27

Aelfred.

BoyMeetsWorld · 16/08/2013 21:42

I love Oberon but don't know if it's actually usable

niffernaffer · 17/08/2013 20:08

That's lovely. I would spell it Auberon though

DS is Cassius. He was nearly a Cyrus though. I love Alexander too but it was vetoed by DP.

GlaikitFizzog · 17/08/2013 22:17

Paris, but only for boys IMO

But I agree that only certain circles can get away with some of these. I would be carted away if I named a child Lysander or Ptolemy

MissingMyMarbles · 17/08/2013 22:35

I want another baby. A boy. And I will call him Alexander

HahaHarrie · 17/08/2013 22:41

I have a Magnus - tis a fab name.

Edmund, Cyril, Balthazar (know a 5yr old Balthy), Cedric, Leo/Leonard, Wilfred, Bede, Augustus, Clement, Sandro, Ceasar, Octave, Rupert.

SpinningSpider · 18/08/2013 05:37

Love Clement. Could never use it though.

niffernaffer · 18/08/2013 20:30

Clement is DS1's name so I'm obviously on the right lines with my thinking for number DS2. I also lurve Augustus (Gus) but DH not keen.
